Understanding the Internet's relevance to media ownership policy: a model of too many choices

L86 - Information and Internet Services ; Computer Software
D11 - Consumer Economics: Theory
Does the Internet provide a failsafe against media consolidation in the wake of an
easing of media ownership rules? This paper posits a model of news outlet selection on the
Internet in which consumers experience cognitive costs that increase with the number of
options faced. Consistent with psychological evidence, these costs may be reduced by
constraining one’s choice set to “safe bets” familiar from offline (e.g., CNN.com). It is
shown that, as the number of outlets grows, dispersion of consumer visitation across outlets inevitably declines. Consequently, independent Internet outlets may fail to mitigate lost outlet independence on other media.

This paper looks at a new body of literature that deals with two-sided markets and focuses on the Internet Service Provider (ISP) segment. ISPs seem to act as a platform enabling transactions between web sites and end consumers. We propose a strategic guide for ISPs that covers features of two-sided markets such as strong externalities and discuss how these market characteristics can affect competition policy.

The advance of innovative information and communication technologies has triggered a fundamental upheaval in the media industry. The technology is reforming the conventional media model. The media mix will become more varied; interactive and personalised offers are taking root and finding their ideal milieu on the web. Newspapers, radio stations and TV broadcasters will have to reposition themselves if they want to remain attractive in the media industry with the arrival of the Web 2.0. This will include seeking new distribution channels and considering e.g. pay-per-view programming and innovative forms of advertising.

Against a background of competition and the generalisation of IP that characterises the field of electronic communications, the concept of the "bundle" has resulted in the emergence of "triple play", and even "quadruple play." This paper offers an overview of the growth of this phenomenon by introducing a distinction between the basic components of multiplay strategies and the diverse range of functions that can be linked to these strategies.

Abstract: Digital convergence thrusts telephony, television and the internet into the socalled 'triple play' offerings, creating new forms of rivalry between cable operators and
telephone companies. Markets participants feel compelled to enter new industries to survive, even though their core competencies are limited to their primary market. The outcome of triple play competition is likely to depend on the speed of the development of new technologies and the adaptation of the regulatory environment. In the short run, telephone companies will enjoy an advantage attributable to switching costs. However, this advantage will erode as younger subscribers switch to telephony on the internet.

Service Bundling and the Role of Access Charge in the Broadband Internet Service Market

Using the classical Hotelling model, this paper analyzes the incentive for a CATV service provider to bundle broadband internet services when entering the broadband internet services market. In addition, the effect of such service bundling by an entrant on the market incumbent with ownership over existing bottleneck facilities is analyzed. Furthermore, an access charge that maximizes social welfare is explored and determined. Two cases are considered: in the first case, the market is fully covered; and in the second case, the market is not fully covered. With full market coverage, an entrant has an incentive for service bundling if there is sufficient service differentiation. The entrant's bundling strategy reduces the incumbent's profit. In this case, the total social welfare is independent of the level of the access charge and only has an effect of redistributing the net surplus between consumers and the incumbent. With partial market coverage, the entrant has an incentive for service bundling at a low access charge. The incumbent's profit increases if the access charge is higher than the cost of access provisioning. In this case, the total social welfare is dependent on the level of access charge and the welfare maximizing access charge is less than the unit cost of providing access.

The paper discusses to what extent innovation is a crucial variable in explaining the success of NOVABASE, a Portuguese IT consultancy firm. In order to proceed with this discussion, the evolution of NOVABASE is described, emphasizing the most important steps in the firm’s trajectory, which are shown to result from the joint influences of upstream technological change, downstream market opportunities, and the firm’s strategic options. Then, the paper reviews some contributions stemming form studies of innovation in services, building on these to form the framework of analysis used in the empirical research. The main results of the empirical work are then presented, leading to the discussion of the possible answers to the question in title.

This paper analyzes seller choices and outcomes in approximately 700 Internet auctions of a relatively homogeneous good. The ‘Buy it Now’ option allows the seller to convert the auction into a posted price market. We use a structural model to control for the conduct of the auction as well as product and seller characteristics. In explaining seller choices, we find that the ‘Buy it Now’ option was used more often by sellers with higher ratings and offering fewer units; and posted prices were more prevalent for used items. In explaining auction outcomes, we find that auctions with a ‘Buy it Now’ price had higher winning bids, ceteris paribus, whether or not the auction ended with the ‘Buy it Now’ offer being accepted, possibly reflecting signaling or bounded rationality. We also find that posting prices, by combining ‘Buy it Now’ and an equal starting price, was an effective strategy for sellers in the sample.

Seller strategies on eBay: Does size matter?

We examine seller strategies in 1177 Internet auctions on eBay, to understand the diversity of strategies used, and their impacts. Dimensions of strategic choice include the use of a ‘Buy it Now’ option, the level of the starting price, and the use of a secret reserve price. A major focus of our analysis is on differences across sellers with different volumes of sales. The largest volume sellers (termed “retailers”) in our sample employ uniform selling strategies, but lower volume sellers exhibit a wide variety of strategic choices. While some components of sellers’ strategies appear important in raising seller revenue, including starting the auction with a ‘Buy it Now’ offer, the overall impact of seller strategy choices on the outcome appears to be quite small. We interpret this as evidence for the competitiveness of the online auction market for frequently traded items with conventional retail alternatives. An exception is provided by the use of a secret reserve price, which raises the winning bid conditional on a sale, but reduces the probability of a sale. Depending on sellers’ risk aversion and impatience, this may also be an efficient outcome.

Offshoring of IT services and back-office services to low-wage countries is a fast-growing market. Besides India, the pacesetter and dominant insourcer, there are numerous other countries and regions attempting to establish themselves as offshoring locations. Our report focuses on nearshoring locations in Central and Eastern Europe. An increasing number of examples confirm the growing importance of this region. However, a precise comparison of the attributes of different locations reveals that Central and Eastern Europe only leads the way in specific areas and for tasks with specific requirements.

IT outsourcing is the practice of contracting out the running of a part of an organization computer department. It is not a new phenomenon, but the scale and scope of its occurrence has greatly increased over the last decade. Due to the fact that IT outsourcing has no obviously and quantifiable benefits, most of the business entities choose not to do outsource their IT. The paper is based on the idea of incapability of exact determination of IT services costs. The purpose of this research regards the layout of the current approaches to outsourcing, description of different types of IT outsourcing and their advantages and the analysis of some models which might be used in order to facilitate the IT decision making process.

Cognitive task automation may lead to over trust, complacency and loss of the necessary work environment situation awareness. This is a major constraint in complex work organizations teamwork, ending up into an operational gap, between system developments and its understanding and usability, by operators. This document presents a summary of the main results of author’s research on operational decision processes and occupational competences, applied to the air traffic control operational reality.
Introducing a human/technological complementary approach to virtual team’s conceptualisation, the results show there is a dimension to be followed in human/machine integration, which stands beyond interface design, and calls for a deeper human comprehension of technological agent’s structure and functionalities, which will, ultimately, require the development of an operational cognitive framework, where work processes and technological behaviour are integrated in professional competences, as he two faces of the same coin.

Implications of the Information and Communication Technology Development on Firms’ Performance

The society towards we are heading is and will be an Informational Society-Knowledge Society (IS-KS). This mainly relies on using Information and Communication Technology (ICT). The syntagm which designates the new society particularly points out the means on which it will rely on its progress, which, at first sight, gives the impression of one technicist, unilateral name. The syntagms which have defined societies until now, contain a key-word (slavery, feudalism, capitalism), which synthesizes a scale of possible social situations in which people, individual or/and in group, are inevitably placed, according to certain conditions, making a specific economic-social structure.
Nowadays, society is defined by the syntagm “new economy”, which clearly presents the message of some profound changes which are taking place. Of course, the new economy supposes a lasting growth, but it induces another approach of this lasting growth, different from the one which was made so far.

L86 - Information and Internet Services ; Computer Software
Though Business Process Outsourcing (BPO) industry is of recent origin in India it has attracted the attentions of entrepreneurs, policy makers and media persons equally due to its phenomenal growth. The growth of this sector has not only helped to improve our current account balance, but also generated income and employment. This paper looks at this IT-enabled service (ITES) based industry particularly focusing on three major service lines, viz., customer care, financial and health care. It analyses India’s strengths and weaknesses vis-à-vis the competing countries. While the major strength of Indian BPO industry is the availability of cost-effective manpower, ironically, it has been observed that the major challenges faced by the industry in India today are mainly human resource related. The paper comes up with the possible measures necessary for keeping India’s competitive edge intact in this segment.

The Republic of Croatia is one of the transition countries that have abandoned planned economy and turned towards market-oriented economy. These new conditions of the market-oriented economy required normative adjustments in certain spheres of social and economic activity, resulting in the realization of new income in the budget structure, the likes of which were unknown in the economy of self-managing socialism. New sorts of budget income found themselves in the quantitative and qualitative function of satisfying public needs. In that respect, the authors of this paper explain the following:
• The concept of concession, i.e., concession income in telecommunications;
• The concept of telecommunications;
• Normative regulations related to telecommunications in the Republic of Croatia;
• Normative prerequisites for the realization of concession income on the example of a radio station.

The paper deals with business potential analysis based on the data published by Czech
Statistic Authority (SÚ). It shows that the infrastructure state of the art even in small Czech
companies enables to expand ERP and CRM systems, trading over Internet, Supply Chain
Management and other new trends. Internet security is here of greatest importance, however it
cannot be seen as major obstacle for new trading methods. The greatest challenge identified is
the process and workflow optimization. To streamline workflow the document management
supporting nearly seamless integration crossover the functional areas is of greatest
importance. Moreover, process optimization can run into difficulties due to cross-organization
functionalities of new IT architecture concepts like Service Oriented Architecture, WEB2
concepts and other methods and means. In this paper the value flow approach is shortly
mentioned as an alternative to process modeling and workflow approach. Value oriented
methods can overcome the process oriented approach limitations.

National Innovation System and the Emergence of Indian Information and Software Technology Multinationals
Pradhan, Jaya Prakash
F23 - Multinational Firms ; International Business
L86 - Information and Internet Services ; Computer Software
The dramatic growth of outward FDI from India over the past decade is significantly led by Indian information and software technology (IST) firms. These IST firms have aggressively adopted outward FDI as a competitive strategy for seeking overseas markets, networks, skills and technologies. This study analyzes the factors leading to the emergence of these Indian IST firms as multinationals in the global market. Applying the theoretical framework of national innovation system (NIS), the study establishes that origin of Indian IST multinationals are critically linked to the overall policy environment and strategic government intervention in skill formation, development of supporting institutions, proactive role of Indian households in undertaking human capital investment and providing risk taking entrepreneurs, and also to the firm‐level business strategies. The Indian experience shows that the development of a suitable NIS is required if other developing countries are aspiring to build their capability in the IST industry.

Abstract: One of noticeable features of globalization are rapid changes of information systems. If a company wants to be successful, it must carry out many actions having impact on information system. This increasingly concerns multi-national companies, which solve this challenge by multi-national ERP system implementations. Some basic formal prerequisites must be fulfilled to introduce successful multi-national ERP system. Harmonized legal, currency and custom systems in target countries are to be mentioned here in the first place. Intercompany decision system and culture are the next important point. After the delivering party is chosen, other important principles are to be complied with. Local specifics shall be taken into account in order to avoid conflicts, delays and language barriers. Proper definitions and clauses in all parts of the contract help to solve eventual problems during project and implementation stage. These topics must be mastered not only by company lawyers but by IT managers, too. This is why it is an opposite praxis to include tuition of special law lectures into management and information technology education.

Emergence of Knowledge Society: The Indian Scenario

J81 - Working Conditions

L86 - Information and Internet Services ; Computer Software
Knowledge Society is characterised by recognition of knowledge as main source of efficiency, competitiveness, and economic growth. Since late 1990s, a large segment of mainstream media and economists have been obsessed with the continued run of ‘Knowledge Economy’ in OECD countries and its emergence in the developing countries. This new model of growth and development, depending more on human knowledge and efficiency rather than on difficult to disperse physical capital, is supposed to be more egalitarian. Proper policies in developing countries are advocated to build up large volume of ‘working capital’ in terms of human resource and corner a large market share of the global knowledge economy in contrast to their financial crunch and meagre stake in global goods-trade. In this paper we look at some of these issues in light of Indian experiences to bring out the inherent characteristics of the Knowledge Economy from amidst the rhetoric and underline the task ahead of us to truly transform India into a knowledge society.

Multi-national companies introduce centralized or centrally administered ERP systems to cope with challenges of globalization. Introduction of such systems need careful planning. The planning should take not only the project and its deployment into consideration. Very important are the support and maintenance rules. The paper deals with rules used in case of a large multi-national company and resulting reaction of users in several subsidiaries in Central and Eastern Europe. The statistics obtained during first months of operation illustrate the results.

Understanding the implementation of e-business strategies: Evidence from Luxembourg

L21 - Business Objectives of the Firm
O33 - Technological Change: Choices and Consequences ; Diffusion Processes
L86 - Information and Internet Services ; Computer Software
Our empirical study aims at identifying the drivers of the implementation of an e-business strategy by firms located in Luxembourg. The setting up of such a strategy is apprehended through the website and the type of strategy through the functionalities available on the Internet. Thus we distinguish an information-oriented strategy from a commercially oriented one. Probit analyses and models derived from count data models are conducted on a dataset of website investments by about 1100 firms located in Luxembourg. Our results show that the sale of online fashionable products like tourism, the ownership of a well-known brand and the follow-up of rivals' behaviours are highly significant determinants of the adoption and development of an e-business strategy. Financial, human and technological resources seem to favour the adoption of such a strategy but have no significant influence on the choice of the strategy pursued. Moreover the use of technologies that make the business process more flexible, public actions that diffuse best practices concerning technologies adoption and being the leader on the market are specific drivers of the deployment of an e-business strategy. Finally, an intense perceived competition negatively influences the decision to invest heavily in e-commerce.

ActiveX is a set of technologies that has the potential to change the way information is accessed and used on the Internet; allows software components to interact with one another in a networked environment, regardless of the language in which the components were created. Powerful abstractions based on OLE have been developed to enable fast, scaleable integration of your objects within the Internet. Microsoft is making a major effort to make the Internet everything it can possibly be. By using ActiveX, developers can make the best use of their system resources while providing instant, dynamic content and functionality in their Internet applications. How information is presented greatly affects how interesting and usable people find it.

e-Business Management – the particular form of management

Lots of business experts have great ideas about the ways in which Web technologies can be used to enhance customer/partner relationships, increase market share, enhance competitive advantage, etc. However, many of these e-business ideas never take shape simply because it was so difficult to "sell" the idea to the key business decision-makers.
What is the key to selling an e-business idea to decision-makers?
What are the strategic factors who make this idea to become real?
I think that the key is to try to understand the decision from their perspective.

In an auction with a buy price, a seller offers bidders the opportunity to forgo competing in an auction by transacting immediately at a pre-specified fixed price. If a seller has aspirations in the form of a reference price that depends upon the auction's reserve price and buy price, she does best to keep her aspirations sufficiently low by designing a no-reserve auction with a buy price low enough that some bidder types would exercise it with positive probability in equilibrium. The seller is indifferent between the auction component of her mechanism being a first- or second-price auction.

Ageing society opens up enormous economic potential. Whereas for a long time social interpretation homed in on the doomsday scenarios of demographic change, it is the economic potential that is now emerging with increasing clarity. Information and communication technologies stand a good chance of benefiting from this trend. Older people are not intrinsically technology refuseniks, as evidenced by the growing number of silver agers using the internet.
Successful products will be far removed from disenfranchisement and stigmatisation. The challenge to product developers and marketing strategists is to create age-appropriate offers that older people do not perceive as encroaching on their autonomy or pointing up their physical infirmities. Particularly promising are offers enabling barrier-free use without seeming like segregational solutions for specific age groups.
User friendliness, value systems and the legal framework are currently stymieing yet wider success. Technical fascination aside, the business potential hinges directly on regulations concerning data protection, teletreatment and cost reimbursement, on user friendliness and society’s attitude towards the application of robotics in medicine and healthcare. The tasks involved are enormous. Product developers, marketing strategists, physicians, nurses and carers, politicians and older people in need of help themselves must be prepared to take the new routes.
Assistance systems, e-Health and health games benefit from demographic change. The range of offers is highly diversified. They extend from ‘intelligent’ tablet dispensers, emergency bio sensor technology in motor vehicles and motion sensor technology through tele-monitoring and online consultations to brain jogging and exercise games.

A Discrete Choice Model for Web Site Work Results

Currently a corporate web site is not considered as a necessary business attribute, but as a marketing tool which should yield results. In this study we consider a web site as an instrument for attraction of new partners (customers, suppliers). Web site outputs are a number of visitors interested in contact information (reached the contact info page) and a number of visitors who sent a request via a special form on the web site.
We build a sequential discrete choice model for web site outputs. Explanatory variables set includes a number of visited pages, seconds spent on the web site, and dummy variables for specific pages visited (a page with prices information, a portfolio page). Also we investigate an influence of search engines (Google, Yahoo, MSN), which refer a visitor to a corporate web site and keywords used for pay-per-click advertising campaigns.
We estimate model parameters on the base of a small UK-based web development company's web site statistical data and discover strong dependencies, which allow improving web site organisation and its search engine positioning.

The ongoing globalization of production was accompanied by the fast development of information and communication systems. Especially the example of the internet shows this very clearly. Although this relatively young communication network is used by an increasing number of people, and the interest in this new technology is widespread, nevertheless there still exists a multitude of questions about the economic backgrounds. It is the aim of this paper, to identify as well as structure the spectrum of areas of research in this field, esentially in order to provide an introduction and a general idea about the recent state.

Reputation systems that rely on feedback from traders are important institutions for helping sustain trust in markets, while feedback information is usually considered a public good. We apply both theoretical models and experiments to study how raters' feedback behavior responds to different reporting costs and how to improve market efficiency by introducing a pre-commitment device for sellers in reputation systems. In particular, the pre-commitment device we study here allows sellers to provide rebates to cover buyers' reporting costs before buyers make purchasing decisions. Using a buyer-seller trust game with a unilateral feedback scheme, we find that a buyer’s propensity to leave feedback is more sensitive to reporting costs when the seller cooperates than when the seller defects. The seller’s decision on whether to provide a rebate significantly affects the buyer’s decision to leave feedback by compensating for the feedback costs. More importantly, the rebate decision has a significant impact on the buyer's purchasing decision via signaling the seller's cooperative type. The experimental results show that the rebate mechanism improves the market efficiency.

Why do some individuals pirate digital music while others pay for it? Using data on a sample of undergraduate students, we study the determinants of music piracy by looking at whether a respondent’s last song was obtained illegally or not. In doing so, we incorporate (i) the individual-specific transactions costs that constitute the effective price of illegal music; and (ii) individual willingness to pay (WTP) for digital music, which we elicit using a simple field experiment and which we use to control for the unobserved heterogeneity of preferences between respondents. Our empirical results indicate that a respondent’s subjective probability of facing a lawsuit and her degree of morality both have a negative impact on the likelihood that her last song was obtained illegally. These results are robust whether WTP is estimated parametrically or nonparametrically. We conclude by discussing the practical implications of our findings.

It is very important to a company to select the optimal CRM program based on its needs, especially there are hundreds of programs, similar in general, different in price and functions and many companies do only comparing between those programs, trying to select the best on this comparison.
This research aimed to suggest an software evaluation system, to select the best CRM based customer's needs, using Cased based Reasoning- CBR- techniques, and associations Rules, in addition to evaluate these programs internally, and find the similarity rate between customer's needs and program's features.
The evaluation system depends on a number of questions, have to be answered by the vendors, to specify their program features, after that the customer will answer also the same questions, to determine his needs, and give a weight related to each question. At the end, the evaluation system will select the best program, that has the top rank based on the similarity between customer's needs and program features.

Future Bangalores? The increasing role of Central and Eastern Europe in the global services offshoring market: evidence from trade statistics

Many Central and Eastern European countries invigorated by EU enlargement became important locations for offshored service centres. Building on the region’s nearshoring advantages such as geographical-cultural proximity and on its multilingual graduate supply, CEE is likely to utilise more value added and quality-driven services. Trade statistics support the assumption that an expanding export in other business and ICT services has been associated with offshoring services in the six NMS analysed in detail in the paper. The service export data adopted from the Balance of Payments statistics gives a good approximation to indentify those sections of service trade, which can be regarded as offshorable. The paper summarises the additional factors favouring nearshoring (as in CEE locations) over offshoring (e.g. India) and lists several factors besides size why CEE countries cannot outpace India’s market potential.

Regional Skill Supplies and Location of Firms: The Case of Information Technology Industry in India

The “new economic geography” of the IT industry is shaped by two characteristic features of the industry, smaller size of the firms and zero transportation costs of its products that provide its ability of being a ‘footloose’ industry. The IT industry could locate itself in a region on the basis of two factors, namely, the nearness to large markets that ensures steady demand for its products, and the nearness to its factors of production. The importance of proximity to large markets in the case of Indian IT industry is only marginal as the IT industry, mainly dominated by the computer software segment, is a highly export oriented industry. There are reasons, however to believe that the location of firms in the ICT industry would be based on the supply of its crucial factor of production, namely, skilled labour. The IT industry being a skilled-labour-intensive, export-oriented industry it is by reducing the cost of labour, relative to capital, that it can reap comparative advantage benefits. Moreover, the skill requirement of this industry being very flexible and is subjected to fast rate of obsolescence it remains important for the firm, in order to have uninterrupted production, to locate itself in large pools of skilled labour. Correlations drawn between the location of firms and regional supply of skills tend to support the hypothesis that the quantity and quality of skills supplied in a region could determine the location of firms in a region and clustering of firms to a city.

Increasingly, many academics and business people appreciate that the kind of society humanity is moving towards is a knowledge society which is supported by a knowledge economy. A key feature of the knowledge society (Draganescu, 2004) is the emergence of a new economy where innovation process becomes curcial, where knowledge is unprecedentedly disseminated to al citizens through new ways of communication (internet, e-book, e-learning, etc.).
In this type of society, the new economy - ofen clled knowledge - based economy - owes its apparence to a number of important forces now at work in the sense of changing the rules of business and national competitiveness: globalization, the increasingly use of knowledge and information, the computer networks and internet connectivity.

National economy and security are fully dependent on information technology and infrastructure. At the core of the information infrastructure society relies on, we have the Internet, a system designed initially as a scientists’ forum for unclassified research. The use of communication networks and systems may lead to hazardous situations that generate undesirable effects such as communication systems breakdown, loss of data or taking the wrong decisions. The paper studies the risk analysis of the accounting information system in modern corporations from the viewpoint of modernising accounting against the background of implementing new information technologies aimed at carrying out the objectives of integration and globalisation construed as phenomena specific to information society and knowledge.

Software market is considered as a new object for the mathematical economics. A statistical study of the server operating systems market is provided, static and dynamic models of for-profit and non-for-profit software developers mixed duopoly are built (taking into account market growth, interactions with hardware vendors, software piracy, and non-zero technical support costs). Stochastic generalizations of the Harrod – Domar model, Solow model, and the fundamental model of innovations diffusion model in terms of spatial heterogeneous economy are developed. The generalization of the Pontryagin maximum principle for distributed economic systems optimal control is formulated.
The book is intended for academics specializing in mathematical economics and knowledge economics and university students of economics.

Nowadays high profile merger cases are becoming quite important and are taken as
milestones of legal systems that produce the needed juridical backbone of the evolution of the
market regulation. Additionally such cases are equally important for the progress of the
economic theory in the domain of competition analysis and policies.
This study will give outlook of the decisions made by the European Commission, as well
as, the US Department of Justice in the merger case of two telecommunication corporations-
WorldCom and MCI. This case was one of the most important cases that determined the future
development of the telecommunication and Internet industry worldwide. The main point of the
case analysis is to consider the competitive effects produced by such possible merger and the
possible solutions in case of anticompetitive outcomes.
The methodology used while writing the essay is based on two major parts: I) analytical
part that takes most of the analyses and II) theoretical part. The first part is comprised of the
analyses of the US Department of Justice and especially Federal Communications Commission
that has the authority for such cases, as well as, the profound opinion and conclusions of the
European Commission (DG Competition) of one questionable segment of the
telecommunications market, the Internet market, that creates anticompetitive effects. The second
part will give the predominant theoretical concepts used by the antitrust authorities.

This article presents a method for valuing software based on the income that use of that software is expected to generate in the future. Well-known principles of intellectual property (IP) valuation, sales expectations, discounting to present value, and the like, are applied, always focusing on the benefits and costs of software. A major issue, not dealt with in the literature of valuing intangibles, is that software is continually upgraded. Applying depreciation schedules is the simple solution, but does not represent at all the actual devaluation of the inherent IP of software. A realistic approach, allowing ongoing maintenance, is presented here. All steps of the process are presented and then integrated via a simple quantitative example. Having a quantitative model on a spreadsheet allows exploration of business alternatives. An example a service model is evaluated. Conclusions are drawn that reflect on academic and business practice.

ICT plays a significant role in the life of enterprises. Micro and Small Enterprises (MSEs) have to be familiar and in tune with ICT applications, within the context of fast evolving global market dynamics. However, how far MSEs of rural India could address this challenge of adoption of ICT within their enterprise level? What are the challenges and opportunities that rural MSEs could accrue from ICT adoption?

Botnet economics and devising defence schemes from attackers’ own reward processes
Pau, Louis-François
C7 - Game Theory and Bargaining Theory
L86 - Information and Internet Services ; Computer Software
N4 - Government, War, Law, International Relations, and Regulation
This paper focuses on botnet economics and design
of defensive strategies. It takes the view that by combining scarce information on the attackers’ business models, with rational economic analysis of these business processes, one can identify design rules for economic defense mechanisms which the target can implement, often in a cheap way in addition to technical
means. A short survey of game theory in the security area, is followed by a real case of an Internet casino. This leads to develop a model, applicable to this case and others, which is presented first qualitatively then quantitatively. This allows carrying out different analyses based on different equilibrium or termination
principles; the ones studied are reward break-even analysis, and Max-Min analysis from game theory, for the target and the attackers. On that basis, a number of specific economic and information led defense strategies are identified which can be further studied using the model and specific adaptations to other
data or cases.

This paper aims at defining a set of privacy metrics (quantitative and qualitative) in the case of the relation between a privacy protector ,and an information gatherer .The aims with such metrics are : -to allow to assess and compare different user scenarios and their differences ;for examples of scenarios see [4]; -to define a notion of privacy boundary, and design it to encompass the set of information , behaviours , actions and processes which the privacy protector can accept to expose to an information gathering under an agreement with said party ; everything outside the boundary is not acceptable and justifies not entering into the agreement ; -to characterize the contribution of privacy enhancing technologies (PET). A full case is given with the qualitative and quantitative privacy metrics determination and envelope, i.e. a Cisco Inc. privacy agreement.

The communications systems, terminals, and service, industries, have undergone over the past ten years a significant technological internal evolution and external revolution at customer end (such as shifting to IP, wireless 3G and LTE evolutions, new terminals, broadband...). Very little management research has studied their survivability irrespective of changes in demand volumes, due to technological sourcing and outsourcing practices driven by other global industries serving as predators in view of the huge business potential of communications products and services. These other industries include computing software, semiconductor and contract manufacturing industries, many of with roots in emerging countries. This paper analyzes the implications of using in-sourced genuine non-proprietary open communications standards , of the wider use of in-sourced /purchased technologies ,and of outsourced contract manufacturing . The methodology used is equilibrium analyses from case analysis data. They show a trend towards active or passive knowledge leakage. Three specific areas will be mentioned as examples .The paper also shows the processes how eventually those industries in a later cycle bounce back.

This paper presents the first empirical investigation into the effect of e-shopping on subjective well-being. The analysis relies on an Italian nationally and regionally representative dataset from Italy (n = 4,130) drawn from the 2008 wave of the Survey of Household Income and Wealth (SHIW) carried out by the Bank of Italy. Probit, OLS regressions and instrumental variables estimates show that e-shopping is strongly and positively associated with subjective well-being.

What is the True Loss Due to Piracy?: Evidence from Microsoft Office in Hong Kong
Leung, Tin Cheuk
K42 - Illegal Behavior and the Enforcement of Law
L86 - Information and Internet Services ; Computer Software
Software piracy remains rampant despite the successful measures the Hong Kong government has taken to eradicate street piracy. This is because most people prefer substituting a counterfeit copy of a software CD (street piracy) with an illegal download of the software (Internet piracy). To support this claim, I construct a unique data set from 281 college students in Hong Kong to demonstrate two things. First, I estimate a random-coefficient discrete choice demand system for Microsoft Office from legal and different illegal sources. Estimates obtained from a Bayesian approach, with a mixture of normal priors,
indicate a strong substitution pattern between street piracy and Internet piracy. Second, I conduct counterfactuals in which street piracy is absent. Results are twofold. First, most students would switch to Internet piracy. Second, the government, by assuming that each pirated copy represents a lost sale, may over-estimate the gain from eradicating piracy by up to nine times.

In the present research we investigate possible predictors of the presence of women in Spanish online newspapers using an automatic content analysis over a three-month period. Results of the analysis reveal that Spanish online newspapers continue depicting women in a stereotyped manner. Women are still linked to traditionally ‘female’ sections, and they appear more frequently in news considered less important in terms of extension and publication day. The gender of the reporter also matters since female journalists tend to include more women in the news they report than their male peers.

Efficiency of broadband internet adoption in European Union member states

C21 - Cross-Sectional Models ; Spatial Models ; Treatment Effect Models ; Quantile Regressions
L86 - Information and Internet Services ; Computer Software
This paper is devoted to econometric analysis of broadband adoption efficiency in EU member states. Stochastic frontier models are widely used for efficiency estimation. We enhanced the stochastic frontier model by adding a spatial component into the model specification to reflect possible dependencies between neighbour countries. A maximum likelihood estimator for the model was developed.
The proposed spatial autoregressive stochastic frontier model is used for estimation of broadband adoption efficiency. We confirmed a negative impact of average prices of broadband services on broadband adoption in a country and also discovered a significant negative influence of a level of population income inequality.
Significant positive spatial effects also have been revealed, so higher broadband penetration rates in neighbour countries have a positive impact on broadband adoption in a given country.

The problem of piracy has always existed since the beginning of the creation of computers, namely using rudimentary methods. With the emergence and development of Internet and computers more powerful, more sophisticated ways were emerging and less expensive to pirate. Today hacking/software piracy has highly negative consequences, implying huge loss for both the economy and businesses. This paper will study some determinants of hacking. It examines empirically the influence that GDP per capita, the unemployment rate, the rate of education, taxes and the percentage of Internet users have in the piracy rate. It will be used panel data for the 27 EU Member States for the years 2007 and 2008 and analyzed the losses caused by piracy from 2003 to 2008. It will also set out some determinants of the price of software. GDPpc, VAT and internet users have an important impact on software piracy in the EU.

We use data from restaurants in Shanghai, China to conduct a new empirical analysis of prices and coupons. Our results show a positive relationship between prices and online coupons. Moreover, the price premium from couponing is higher for restaurants about which consumer values appear to be more uncertain. When consumer uncertainty is high, restaurants that offer coupons have an average price that is about 60 percent higher than similar restaurants that do not issue coupons. When uncertainty is low, restaurants that offer coupons have an average price that is about ten percent higher. These findings are consistent with online couponing in the restaurant industry being used for price discrimination and as a promotional device in the presence of higher uncertainty in consumer valuations.

Despite a lot of attention gained by the Resource-Event-Agent (REA) framework among researchers in enterprise modeling, it still lacks comprehensive formal description. Most of the formalization approaches to REA use only UML or other graphical representation. This paper aims to define REA ontology at operational level using formal logic tools. The general approach to formal logic description of REA was motivated by LTAP introduced by Ito, Hagihara and Yonezaki. After basic REA concepts are presented, semantics and logical language LREA are defined including axioms for the REA operational level. Future research is shortly described in conclusion.

Effect of increase in allotted time on game playing performance: Case study of an online word game
Putthiwanit, Chutinon
Kincart, Andrew
L86 - Information and Internet Services ; Computer Software
Online game players tend to differ in the duration of time they play. However, no matter whether the time on playing an online game is spent positively or negatively, we may assume that when the duration of each online-game round is increased, players tend to engage in more interaction with their opponents. Though there are a significant number of research studies on time usage in computer games, there is no research exploring the direct effect of time on online game playing performance. As a result, this research aims to investigate the effect of time on player performance based on the case of an online word game. Ninety-three online word games (186 players) were randomly observed via the biggest online board game website in Thailand. The results show that an increase in time does not have effect on players’ performance. The managerial implication for further development is that webmasters may consider offering only time restricted games for players to avoid high traffic in websites; which, in effect will certainly solve the problem of lag time in online gaming.

More and more people around the world are using computer (video) games. The development of the gaming industry means increasing of its complexity in all aspects. Not only is the content represented in games continuously differentiating, but we also see the increasing diversity among their creators, users, researchers and the public. This article aims to draw attention to the possibility of using the concept of social capital in ludologists’ research as well as in improving the quality of games and of the cooperation between social environments related with games. Social capital is understood here as a potential of interactions embedded in interpersonal ties and social norms, which can bring advantages for individuals, groups and societies. The author takes a closer look on: the main features of this multi-dimensional category; significant differences between human, social and cultural capital; as well as the positive and negative influences of social capital.

Computer games (video games) are becoming increasingly popular way to relax, or even to maintain social relationships with other people. However, they are not just only entertainment. Treated as a mass media become a source of income, knowledge and social problems, which may distort the reality presented in them. It may also become the basis for manipulation and propaganda, to serve the struggle for cultural dominance, and indicate social problems.

Increase in popularity of games like "Second Life" has contributed not only to significant changes in the development of the electronic entertainment industry. Promoting Games 2.0, the new trend of video game production that are assumed to be the virtual worlds that contain user-generated content (eg, graphics, music, animations) makes both measured with a specific technological innovation, as well as a serious change in the organization of socio-cultural heritage. The article presents problems of the existing difficulties of terminology, the implications of the availability of Games 2.0 for social life, the concept of leisure as work in the new economy and creative non-material and the characteristics of "Generation C." Work stresses the need for discussion on trends in the development of video games - defined as a choice between the projects' of "socio-cultural ideology of perpetual motion" and "utopia of universal creativity." These approaches allow to identify the methodological basis for analysis of relations between the operators and users of Games 2.0, taking into account the wider social environment.

Patterns of social influence in social networking sites – a design perspective

Social networking sites (SNSs) are quickly becoming the main venues for social interaction of Internet users. As the competition between these online services is growing ever stronger, the success of SNSs derives from persuasive core application designs that influence users in taking specific actions, such as joining the community or recruiting new users. Therefore there is a need to identify relevant, value-adding features that facilitate social interaction and that are integrated in the group’s socialization rituals. The present study employed Cialdini’s framework in the analysis of SNSs design characteristics that facilitate social influence leading to the fulfillment of site marketing objectives, such as member acquisition, member retention and user loyalty. We examined social application features of the three major Romanian SNSs, i.e. Facebook, Hi5 and Neogen on six dimensions corresponding to Cialdini’s social influence principles: reciprocation, consistency, social proof, liking, authority and scarcity. We thereby extract core application commonalities and differences and identify design gaps from a social influence perspective that are to be explored and exploited as a source of competitive advantage. Marketing implications of the results are discussed.

Do privacy laws affect the location decisions of internet firms? evidence for privacy havens
ROCHELANDET, Fabrice
TAI, Silvio H.T.
K29 - Other
F23 - Multinational Firms ; International Business
L86 - Information and Internet Services ; Computer Software
This paper empirically studies the location decisions of internet firms when they face high legal standards of privacy protection. Many factors might influence them: technological spillovers, lower taxation, and so on. Internet firms can also arbitrate national differences and many of them actually locate their activity in order to escape from national laws they consider over-stringent. In the current stage of development of the internet – the so-called Web 2.0 – the ease of access to personal data proved to be strategic input. So the more a jurisdiction makes collecting and using these data easy, the more attractive the country is, if all other things remain constant. One way for a firm to avoid such legal restrictions is to locate or to expand its business in less privacy protective countries. Our empirical results support this 'no-privacy haven' hypothesis. In particular, we highlight a new privacy paradox according to which the more stringent certain online privacy laws are, the more they induce firms to locate their business in less stringent countries, and finally the weaker actual privacy protection on the internet is.

Aproximación al mercado de la información en España. Proveedores y editores de noticias
Baiget, Tomàs

L86 - Information and Internet Services ; Computer Software
It is very difficult to quantify the value of information in general because its value is relative depending on the circumstances of its production, distribution and consumption. The only clear measure for everybody, and the one that is of interest for a country's economy, is the amount of money that will be paid for it, i.e. the market value. Still, market measurement is indirect and many assumptions must be made, due to the complicated segmentation between types of information, products and services, companies, nationalities... Perhaps it is this difficulty that has resulted in very few studies of the information market, even in advanced countries. An important exception is provided by the U.S. consulting firm Outsell Inc., which has spent some years doing research on the world information market. Outsell makes no division by country. Its thematic segmentation approach has been used in this study, and we have chosen the "News suppliers and publishers" segment, to determine what proportion of this segment corresponds to Spain. This paper has to be considered only a first step towards a working methology.

What determines broadband uptake in emerging countries? An empirical study.
Badran, M.F.
L96 - Telecommunications
L86 - Information and Internet Services ; Computer Software
Before recent technological developments in telecom the use of available fixed line was limited to
voice telecommunication only. At present the high frequencies on the subscriber line were used
for high speed internet access. This Internet access technology is generally referred to as
broadband. A popular example is the ADSL, the Asymmetric Digital Subscriber line for
broadband Internet access.
Econometric studies performed to evaluate the uptake of broadband have focused on developed
economies like USA and OECD countries. However, emerging economies are playing an
increasing role in the global economy. These countries are neither developed or least developed
countries. They are a heterogeneous group of countries that have certain characteristics in
common. Out of 22 emerging economies used in the sample for this study, 15 economies are
among the top 75 countries for broadband penetration per 100 inhabitants.1 Recognizing the
importance to transform their economies, these countries have adopted policies to transform their
economies from traditional to knowledge based economies. Broadband uptake was recognized by
economists and policy makers as the main vehicle to achieve knowledge based economy. The
purpose of this paper is to determine the factors or indicators that impact broadband penetration
in emerging countries, and to provide policy recommendations to increase broadband uptake in
these economies.

This article describes an expert system, COT-XPERT,
developed for controlling insects and diseases affecting cotton crop as well as system for Rice Stem Borers (RSB) simulation. The system works in two parts. The first part addresses the issues of efficient use of knowledge for RSB problems and predicts the population build-up of RSB after a certain period of time by taking into consideration weather factor, number of larvae per square metre present earlier, fecundity of female and dispersal pattern, etc. The second part is an expert system for the management of cotton pests which diagnoses the pest problem by using information about the damage inflicted to the crop or based on its morphology and displays all technical information about the pests as well as efficient control measures for a particular pest. The paper concluded with a mention of some of the limitations and future research directions for enhancing the qualities of the system.

Contemporary Web stores offer a wide range of products to e-customers. However, online sales are strongly dominated by a limited number of bestsellers whereas other, less popular or niche products are stored in inventory for a long time. Thus, they contribute to the problem of frozen capital and high inventory costs. To cope with this problem, we propose using information on product cost in a recommender system for a Web store. We discuss the proposed recommendation model, in which two criteria have been included: a predicted degree of meeting customer’s needs by a product and the product cost.

In the time where the digital world is moving to mobile devices, new opportunities are emerging for the e-health systems. We live in the time when data are stored in different databases and different ways. This imposed the use of ontologies to resolve interoperability issues. Ontologies can be used for automation of e-health system data flow, enabling automated responses in real time to patient data entered into the medical record from Physicians and hospitals, and by offering caregivers evidence-based, best-practice information about how to act in emergency or nonemergency situations. Mobile e-health semantic systems help Physicians tracking better the health of their patients, avoid mistakes and act faster in emergency situations Semantic technology and database technology in combination with mobile devices together make a combined information system which will revolutionize the way how today’s health institutions treat their patients.
