The Real Thing: Nominal Price Rigidity of the Nickel Coke, 1886–1959

We report that the price of a 6.5oz Coke was 5¢ from 1886 until 1959. Thus, we are documenting a nominal price rigidity that lasted more than 70 years! The case of Coca-Cola is particularly interesting because during the 70-year period there were substantial changes in the soft drink industry as well as two World Wars, the Great Depression, and numerous regulatory interventions and lawsuits, which led to substantial changes in the Coca-Cola market conditions. The nickel price of Coke, nevertheless, remained unchanged. We find that this unusual rigidity is best explained by (1) a contract between the Company and its parent bottlers that encouraged retail price maintenance, (2) a single-coin vending machine technology, which limited the Company’s price adjustment options due to limited availability and unreliability of the existing flexible price adjustment technologies, and (3) a single-coin monetary transaction technology, which limited the Company’s price adjustment options due to the customer “inconvenience cost.” We show that these price adjustment costs are of a different nature than the standard menu cost, and their estimates exceed the existing estimates by an order of magnitude. A possible broader relevance of the nickel Coke phenomenon is discussed in the context of Nickel and Dime Stores, which were popular in the US in the late 1800s and the early 1900s.

In the last years, broad changes have contributed to the enhancement of the importance of the logistics as a source of competitive advantage, not just for increasing the satisfaction of the clients, but also for improving the performance of the firms. Nevertheless, the response functions of the firms to the referred changes are different according to the life-cycle stage that they face. The present paper aims to present a conceptual model that explores the connection between the life-cycle firm’s stages, and the standard profile of logistics activities, and the correspondent impact on performance.

E-learning as internationalization strategy in higher education: Lecturer’s and student’s perspective
Mihhailova, Gerda
M1 - Business Administration
M10 - General
M12 - Personnel Management ; Executives; Executive Compensation
Purpose – Use of e-learning opens up a whole new range of business expansion and
internationalization opportunities for many companies including higher education institutions. The paper seeks to explore the challenges a business college may encounter using e-learning as internationalization strategy. E-learning-related problems are analyzed from two main internal interest groups’ point of view – lecturers and students. The aim of the case study presented in the paper is to find out what are the major challenges from a student and academic personnel perspective using e-learning. This kind of analyses should be the first step introducing e-learning as a strategic
tool for business expansion.
Design/methodology/approach – Questionnaires, in-depth interviewing and semi-structured
group interviews were used to find answers to the posed research questions. Research took place in two phases. In phase one, two types of questionnaires were distributed – Type A to lecturers (ten respondents) and Type B to students (115 respondents), Both types were constructed by the author. In phase two, two in-depth interviews and two semi-structured group interviews were conducted (ten students in one group of interview, eight lecturers in the second group of interview).
Findings – The main problem areas for lecturers related to e-learning are: lack of time, lack of interest/motivation, lack of co-operation, compensation system does not take into account the specifics of e-learning and lecturers are concerned about the quality of teaching in a virtual environment. The most problematic of them appear to be lack of time and inappropriate compensation system. Students appear to have interest in e-courses, but the level of knowledge regarding specifics of web-based learning as well as about e-courses offered was unexpectedly low. This is an especially problematic
case as open university students were the main target group for whom the e-courses were designed in the first place.
Research limitations/implications – The research is based on one case study and thus the
conclusions made may not exactly reflect the situation in all universities of Estonia. But due to the shared economic, cultural and historical background, at least to some extent the case study reflects the main problem areas of all Estonian universities using e-learning.
Originality/value – The originality of the paper stems from an interdisciplinary approach to e-learning – use of e-learning as a tool for internationalization. The paper presents results of a case study research, conducted in an East-European business college and the results of the study are discussed in respect of historical, social and economic specifics of Estonia.

This paper aims to contribute to existing knowledge related to the worker cooperative (CTA) creation process by studying the factors that influence the process using an inductive-deductive method: the Grounded Theory. For this reason, a total of 37 in-depth interviews have been carried out with the founding members of worker cooperatives set up within the period of 2001-2002, all of which are located in the Valencian Community (Spain). As a consequence of the application of the methodology, we have identified a total of 29 codes or factors that influence the behaviour of the founding members in each of the stages involved in the process of the creation of CTA.

Optimizing the Managerial Decision in Energetic Industry

M21 - Business Economics
Making a decision is a complex process which must be based upon a method that is able to establish the optimum criteria in choosing an alternative, in evaluating the main effects of implementing the decision which was taken and in estimating the risks involved. The optimizing methods and techniques fall into several groups. Thus, judging by the number of criteria that was taken into consideration when making decisions, the optimization methods and techniques can be identified as uni-criterial decisions and multi-criterial decisions; considering the objective condition state which affects the problem that needs decisional solution, there can be decisional methods and techniques used in optimizing decisions in conditions of certainty, decisional methods and techniques used in optimizing decisions in conditions of uncertainty and decisional methods and techniques used in optimizing decisions in risky conditions. The continuous improvement of the decisional subsystem - an important component of the firm’s management - represents a necessity under the circumstances that the latest decades reveal a development of the decisional elements, both in the theoretic-methodological field and in the application field. The decisional methods and techniques must be found in the managers’ decisional processes at different hierarchical levels (individual managers or group managers), so that a high scientific materialization level of the methods should be ensured.

Between eternity and actualization: the co-evolution of the fields of communication in the Vatican
de Vaujany, François-Xavier
M10 - General
Most research on structuration or the appropriation of ICT in organizations has put aside the
problem of dyschronies. It has not taken into account the differences in nature, speed, and
temporality of changes that co-exist within an organization. To address this limitation, the author
of this paper suggests a model based on the theory of practice and neo-institutionalist
perspectives, so as to make sense of the co-evolution of intra-organizational fields. This model,
which proposes a balance between various institutional tensions, has been worked out inductively
from a longitudinal case study on communication fields within the Roman Curia, the
administrative headquarters of the Catholic Church located in the Vatican. These tensions are
related to socio-technical, socio-theological, socio-organizational, and socio-economic areas. A
set of propositions regarding the link between intra-organizational fields and tensions and the
relationships between intra-organizational fields (parallel, convergent, and competing evolutions)
is proposed.

Product configurators are considered to be among the most successful applications
of artificial intelligence technology. In this paper, we determine different conceptualizations of configurators and condense them in a comprehensive morphological box, which should support configurator designers as well as decision makers in selecting the right system. The analysis of the criteria according to which configurators that are designed thus far reveals a neglect of the front-end perspective. Therefore, it is relevant to extend configurators with a front-end component assisting customers during product configuration through advisory. We develop a framework describing the main requirements on an advisory system and propose the technical infrastructure for its implementation. Finally, the advisory system and the configurator are integrated into a comprehensive interaction system.

This paper examines the impact of investments in modernization and innovation on productivity in a sample of firms in the global pulp and paper industry. This industry is important because it has traditionally accounted for significant amounts of employment and capital investment in North America and Europe. In contrast to much of the existing literature which focuses on the impact of R&D and patents on firms’ performance and productivity, we examine data on actual investment transactions in four main areas of operations: (i) mechanical, (ii) chemicals, (iii) monitoring devices and (iv) information technology. We find that firms which made decisions to implement a greater number of investment transactions in modernization achieved higher productivity, and these estimated quantitative effects are greater than the impact of standard innovation variables such as patents and R&D. Investment transactions in the information technology and digital monitoring devices imparted a particularly noticeable boost to productivity. These results are obtained after controlling for other firm-specific variables such as capital-intensity and mergers and acquisitions. Two broad messages emerge from our study. First, firms’ decisions to undertake investments in modernization and various forms of incremental innovations appear to be critical for achieving gains in productivity. While these may typically generate small gains on a year-to-year basis, they can compound to form meaningful differences in performance, productivity and competitive position across firms in the longer-run. Second, for some of the traditional industries like pulp and paper, R&D and patents seem to be particularly poor indicators of innovation and, more generally, how firms go about achieving gains in productivity. While this paper focuses on the pulp and paper industry, our broad framework and methodology is general and can be applied to understanding firms’ strategies related to enhancing performance and productivity in a variety of industries.

After a long period of restructuring and outsourcing, companies are increasingly looking for new growth opportunities. Growth with existing prod-ucts or by expansion in new markets is limited. Therefore, companies are searching for ways to expand their activities in new businesses. A frequently used tool of multinational enterprises is corporate venturing. Within cor-porate venturing a further differentiation can be made in internal venturing and external venturing. Internal venturing promotes business ideas generated within the organization whereas external venturing promotes business ideas developed outside the company. Research has been able to show that venturing activi-ties both internal and external can create value.
In this paper we explore a special case of venturing which we call the ‘spin-along approach’. It can be seen as a combination of internal and external ven-turing. In the spin-along approach, a company encourages its employees to take their business idea external and to found a company. Successful companies might later be bought back and integrated into the parent company or the paren-tal will exit the company by selling its equity share. Through literature re-view we have identified different motivations, best practices, and barriers to the successful implementation of a spin-along approach. Furthermore, two case studies will be discussed and compared. We conclude that the approach can successfully complement internal innovation management.

Technology Scouting – a case study on the Deutsche Telekom Laboratories
Rohrbeck, Rene
M10 - General
Technology Intelligence has become an important field of study in which a variety of different methods are discussed, all aiming at identifying opportunities and threats arising from advances in technology. In this respect, Technology Scouting is a method which can lower the time lag between the advances in technology and their detection by methods such as patent or publication analysis. Furthermore, in an environment of increasing technological complexity and the globalization of R&D, the successful identification and usage of external sources of knowledge is becoming increasingly important. In the sourcing of technology the scouts can also play an important role in identifying valuable sources and facilitate the sourcing.
Based on two case studies of the Deutsche Telekom and British Telecom, as well as a literature review, the paper proposes a definition of Technology Scouting, a generic process, and identifies the motivations of the actors in the process.

Strategic Foresight activities enable companies to use weak signals to identify opportunities and threats. Research on Strategic Foresight proposes different methods, discusses their implementation and gives recommendations on how to link Strategic Foresight with other functions in an organization. Based on a literature review, we define a generic framework for the management of Strategic Foresight activities on the strategic, tactical and operational level and identify and discuss actors, methods and systems of Strategic Foresight.
Building on an in-depth case study of the Deutsche Telekom Laboratories we shed light on the implementation of Strategic Foresight activities. In the discussion we focus on the interaction of methods from Consumer Foresight and Technology Intelligence. Taking an example project, we explore how Strategic Foresight is used on the operational level of innovation management. We conclude that Strategic Foresight can successfully contribute to coping with uncertainty and complexity and can feed the front-end of innovation from the market (customer needs) and technology (realization opportunities) perspective.

In today’s fast changing environment large companies need to be fast and flexible to compete successfully against smaller, more agile competitors. Strategic Foresight encompasses a set of tools, processes and organisation forms that enable large companies to identify, assess, and act upon opportunities and threats, that have been identified by weak signals in the periphery. Companies using Strategic Foresight aim at enhancing their innovation capacity, manage disruptions, and shape the future by creating trends favourable to their business model or to their expansion strategy.
Based on a literature review, we define a generic framework for the management of strategic foresight activities on the strategic, tactical and operational level and identify and discuss actors, methods and systems of strategic foresight. Furthermore building on an in-depth case study of the Deutsche Telekom Laboratories we shed light on the implementation of strategic foresight activities. Taking an exemplary project based on opportunities that have been identified by strategic foresight activities, we explore how the different insights have been combined to create the innovation concept and project proposal. We conclude that strategic foresight can successfully contribute to improving the innovation capacity of a firm by combining impulses from the market (customer needs) and technology (realization opportunities) perspective.

Contextual factors are typically neglected in both theorizing and empirical tests on
executive pay. The fast majority of empirical investigations use data from U.S. based
firms. Theoretical implications are typically developed, understood and tested on the
basis of the U.S. context. However, the U.S. case is not the world wide standard. Pay
in other countries is on average considerably lower and have a different pay mix. The
puzzle that from the typical use of agency theory can’t be explained is the variance of
pay practices that exist not only within countries but also across countries. This paper
extends scholars renewed attention to managerial power theory on executive pay. It
sets out how and why institutional theory must be included in explanations of
executive pay. On the basis of a sample of executive pay packages from 17 different
countries we test the theoretical extensions. Results indicate that institutions interact
with firm level determinants of executive pay. Explanations for executive pay should
therefore account for the variance of pay practices within and across countries.
Highlighting that the institutional embeddedness of pay practices play an important
role in finding conclusive explanations of current pay practices.

IT outsourcing is the practice of contracting out the running of a part of an organization computer department. It is not a new phenomenon, but the scale and scope of its occurrence has greatly increased over the last decade. Due to the fact that IT outsourcing has no obviously and quantifiable benefits, most of the business entities choose not to do outsource their IT.
The paper is based on the idea of incapability of exact determination of IT services costs. The purpose of this research regards the layout of the current approaches to outsourcing, description of different types of IT outsourcing and their advantages and the analysis of some models which might be used in order to facilitate the IT decision making process.

THE PROBLEMS OF THE PARTICIPATIVE DECISION PROCESS IN BUSSINESS MANAGEMENT
Stefanescu, Camelia
M10 - General
The complexity and the diversion of the problems in the business practice imposes a new approaching perspective of the companies management, which emphasis the involvement of the employees in all the actions and decisions in wich they are qualified. The problems of the employees participation in the company’s decisional process attracted, in the last decades, more and more the attention of the management specialists. Their interest is accountable if we keep in mind the fact that practical studies, made over many groups of employees, have demonstrated the positive correlate that exists between the participation rank, the grouping cohesion, member solidarity and the degree of social and professional fulfilness. To succeed to handle the intensive competitional situations in the business field, the companies have to spare the old management practices, based on an excessive authority in management. The development of the action and decisions implication forms of the employees in the activity of the organization represent a response for the demands of the modern management, which is influenced by the business objectives achievement by stimulating the employees participation in the companys activities and in the the decision making process if they are competent.

Analiza diagnostic a subsitemelor sistemului de management Diagnosis Analysis of the Sub-Sistems of Management System

M1 - Business Administration
L20 - General
M10 - General
The management system represents all the elements having an organizational, decisional, informational, and methodological character through the agency of whom the process of management is achieved with a view of attaining a maximum level of performance.
The managerial machinery of a modern company has a systemic structure within which the interdependencies among the component elements determine the functioning mechanism of the management at all levels. Irrespective of company’s characteristics (profile, size, market position, etc.) the following components of the management system should be noticed: the decisional sub-system, the organizational sub-system, the methodological and managerial sub-system, and the informational sub-system. The paper deals with a profound diagnosis analysis of these sub-systems considering the case of a company which activates within the Romanian energetic industry.
The decisional sub-system gathers all the decisions adopted and implemented within the company according to the established goals and to the managerial hierarchical configuration. Integrated within the methodology of managerial analysis of the company, the diagnosis analysis of the decisional sub-system has as a goal the knowledge of its components, namely of the decisions established by managers during a certain period, of the manner the authority within the company is structured, of the decisional tools employed as well as of the part played by the organisms of participative management.
Organizational sub-system represents all organizational elements that provide the frame, the division, the combination, and the functionality of labor processes with a view of achieving envisaged goals. The data displayed by the organizational scheme, the organizational and functioning regulations, jobs responsibilities at the level of a machines building company have emphasized several aspects that represent the starting point of analyzing the two components of this management sub-system, namely formal organization and informal organization.
Informational sub-system comprises a series of data, items of information, informational fluxes and circuits, procedures and means of approaching information meant to contribute to the settlement and achievement of the company’s goals. The analysis of the informational sub-system has in view the fact that its part is to provide the company’s inner needs of information and its quality depends on the level of development of the technologies of transmitting information.
The methodological sub-system designates the group of systems (complex methods), methods, and techniques employed in conceiving and exerting managerial functions and relations within a company. The important mutations that take place within the internal and external environment of the companies determine the managerial team to employ systems, methods, and techniques characteristic to managerial activity that are continually up-dated.

This paper examines, in the tradition of descriptive approaches of decision-making, how Romanian executives actually make decisions. It is based on an investigation in which managers from Romania were interrogated about some aspects of the decision-making. The conclusion of this study is that the Romanian managers don’t follow all the recommendations of classical decision theory when they make decisions. That situation is caused not only by the high instability of business environment, but also by some elements of the managerial culture.

Management decision making by the analytic hierarchy process: A proposed modification for large-scale problems

Abdullah, Nur Anisah

C02 - Mathematical Methods
M10 - General
Frequently, management decision making problems involve multiple criteria/objectives/attributes. Over the years, many quantitative methods have been developed to facilitate making rational decisions involving multiple criteria. The Analytic Hierarchy Process (AHP) is, in general, regarded as one of the most successful techniques to solve decision making problems involving multiple criteria. In AHP, the decision maker starts by constructing the overall hierarchy of the decision problem. The hierarchy consists of criteria, subcriteria and alternatives of the decision making problem. A number of pairwise comparison matrices are formed in order to derive weights of the criteria and the local weights of the alternatives. Subsequently, the principle of hierarchical composition is used to determine the global weights of the alternatives. The alternative with the highest global weight is selected as the best alternative. The drawback of the traditional AHP is that it requires a large number of pairwaise comparisons, especially in the presence of a large number of criteria. The present empirical study attempts to investigate the possibility of eliminating insignificant criteria in order to reduce AHP computational time. Using the Expert Choice software, findings confirm that criteria that carry comparatively lesser weights can be excluded from the hierarchy and thereby the total time required for making the pairwise comparisons can be reduced drastically. To solve large-scale enterprise multi-criteria decision making problems (that involve large number of criteria) by AHP, it is proposed that at the very outset, decision makers can apply nominal group technique to identify the insignificant criteria. These criteria can be dropped from subsequent analysis and this exclusion will not affect the final decision significantly. This proposed methodology is expected to enhance the applicability of AHP in solving various kinds of larger sized multi-criteria decision making problems in any enterprise.

M10 - General
Based on the literatures of organizational learning and change, this research continues to focus on the individual level of learning in organization. Individual learning comprises of at least the cognitive and behavioral aspects as the two represent two different phenomenon and complementary to each other. A questionnaire survey was conducted with employees of corporations in Thailand with an attempt to seek for factors in which influence the level of learning in individuals in both cognitive and behavioral contexts. Among the three influential factors, perceived negative impact from change hinders the cognitive buy-in of change initiative the most, while the general understanding of the necessity of organizational learning and change depicted as the strongest factor in inducing individual’s participative cooperation to change projects. Additionally, the overall results suggest that organizations in which are involved in organizational change movement should pay attention in educating their employees to be highly aware of the importance of organizational learning and change in general, as well as, creating more of the direct positive impact and less of the direct negative impact from any specific change movement, in order to be able to gain employees’ cognitive understanding of and behavioral cooperation to the change.

Virtual teams and management processes in them have been researched mainly theoretically. Most of these
papers concentrate on presenting the definition and/or on outlining the advantages/disadvantages of virtual
teams. Use of virtual teamwork is still relatively new field for academic research and even when researched
empirically usually case study, interviewing or some other small sample approach is used. Current paper tries to
test on a bigger sample of data, based on a questionnaire type of research, is the use of virtual teams really
growing as usually stated in theoretical papers on this subject. As use of ICT is one of the main characteristics
of virtual teams the study concentrates on issues related to ICT-mediated communication for co-operation
purposes. The empirical results presented in the article are based on a sample of 226 Estonian service sector
organizations.

Internet technology has been used by most of the organizations in the world today. One of the primary vehicles of information gathering and dissemination in today’s world is organizational website. This research evaluates the performance of the present TV3 (a popular private television station in Malaysia) website. By means of an on-line survey and a few focus group discussions, it also identifies the website viewer requirements and their corresponding importance level. Subsequently, the technical requirements are identified that can fulfill the viewer requirements. A House of Quality (HOQ) is built to find the relationship between the viewer and technical requirements. The Quality Function Deployment (QFD) exercise provides the prioritized technical requirements, which is expected to guide the TV3 website development and maintenance team in its future website redesigning project. The findings of the research are also expected to provide some insight in other organizations in similar need.

Development of software is one of the most expensive projects undertaken in practice. Traditionally, the rate of failure in software development projects is higher compared to other kinds of projects. This is partly due to the failure in determining software users’ requirements. By using Quality Function Deployment (QFD), this research focuses on identification and prioritization of users’ requirements in the context of developing quality health-care software system for Sultan Qaboos University Hospital (SQUH) in Oman. A total of 95 staff working at eight departments of SQUH were contacted and they were requested to provide their requirements in using hospital information systems. Analytic Hierarchy Process has been integrated with QFD for prioritizing those user requirements. Then, in consultation with a number of software engineers, a list consisting of 30 technical requirements was generated. These requirements are divided into seven categories and all of them are purported to satisfy the user needs. At the end of QFD exercise, continuous mirror backup from backup category, multi-level access from the security and confidentiality category, linkage to databases from application category emerge as technical requirements having higher weights. These technical requirements should receive considerable attention when designing the health-care software system for SQUH.

Network embeddedness, specialization choices and performance in investment banking industry

The idea that network structure and embeddedness affect firms’ competitive behavior and performance is not new both in network literature and in strategic management literature. This study recognizes that the possibility to fully exploit network opportunities is depending on firm specialization choices.
By analyzing network embeddedness within the European investment banking industry, I find that banks enhance performance by having a central position in their network and that specialization reduces bank’s benefits of having a central position in the network.

The Learning Organisation and National Systems of Competence Building and Innovation
Lam, Alice
Lundvall, Bengt-Aake
L2 - Firm Objectives, Organization, and Behavior
O31 - Innovation and Invention: Processes and Incentives
M10 - General
This paper is based on a hypothesis that we have entered a specific phase of economic development, which we refer to as the 'learning economy', where knowledge and learning have become more important than in any earlier historical period. In this new context the learning capability of firms located in the domestic economy becomes a major concern for national governments and, at the same time, the national infrastructure supporting knowledge creation, diffusion and use becomes a concern for management and employees. To get the two to match and support each other becomes a prerequisite for economic success for firms as well as for the national economy. One of the main objectives of this paper is to demonstrate that societal institutions, which may exist at the national or regional levels, shape the types of organisational learning predominating at the level of the firm. The paper develops the concept of a 'national system of competence building and innovation' by linking national specificities in the formation of skills and labour market dynamics to the micro-level processes of knowledge creation and learning within and between firms. It uses the examples of Japan, Denmark and the high-technology clusters in the US and UK to illustrate the logic of institutionalised variation in patterns of learning and innovation. The paper argues that tacit knowledge, which is difficult to create and transfer in the absence of social interaction and labour mobility, constitutes a most important source of learning and sustainable competitive advantage. Learning builds on trust and social capital. Institutions that are able to imbue these elements into firms and markets encourage interactive learning and are more likely to produce strong innovative capabilities.

The experience of the past crises shows that the recession affecting mainly local companies, multinational companies managed to make profits during hard times for the economy of the host country, and the management is put in front of new challenges.

The economic theories and the accounting regulations deriving from them should be reconsidered for SMEs. At global level, there are accomplishments in this respect – IASB IFRS for SMEs – or intentions – European Commission proposals for certain simplifications of the European directives. However, for these actions to be successful, further investigations concerning the theoretical and technical implications are necessary. In this study, we present our opinion concerning the theoretic influences (reconsideration of the conceptual framework) and the technical influences (change in the disclosure requirements and change in the content of the standards, namely recognition and valuation) implied by a standard for SMEs.

STRATEGIC costs management at societies group level. Multicriterial model for optimization

M10 - General
In our opinion, the performances at group level must be analyzed differently, depending on the adopted strategy. Thus, we consider that a major problem of the accounting and cost control is their compatibility with the strategy. This is justified by the fact that a certain system, that can be an efficient instrument for assessing the performances of a group whose strategy is cost dominated, could cause malfunctions in a company that adopts a differentiation strategy. Because groups’ management currently faces a specific problem – adopting decisions when several objectives are followed simultaneously or the same objective common for more branches – we consider that, in such cases, the decisions cannot be based on a classic model of optimization of a single objective function. We consider that an optimization model with several objective functions, which aims at optimizing the costs for the subsidiaries and choosing a satisfactory solution for the company, is necessary.

Do consumers make too much effort to save on cheap items and too little to save on expensive items? experimental results and implications for business strategy

The article presents an experiment that illustrates a behavior that I denote “relative thinking.” Subjects in the experiment revealed the minimal price difference for which they were willing to spend 20 minutes and go to a cheaper store. Five different goods and nine different prices were used in a between-subjects design. Subjects showed striking positive correlation between the good’s price and their valuation of their time as it was reflected in their decisions. The experiment suggests that subjects think about both the relative and the absolute price differences, even though according to economic theory they should only consider the absolute price difference. Quantifying the effect suggests that consumers’ valuation of their time is approximately proportional to the square root of the price of the good they want to purchase. Studying economics courses seems to mitigate relative thinking. Several alternative explanations for the observed behavior are suggested and discussed, but the conclusion is that only the relative thinking explanation can account for the experimental results. Finally, several implications of relative thinking for business strategy are discussed.

1. Information systems have recently undergone substantial changes. The computing power has experiencing a move from “Asset” to “Expense”. Under the emerging model of cloud computing, user organizations do not need to have an ownership of the information systems. They can now just use the computing power, as a service, that is provided by IT system companies.
2. Recently, Japan’s foreign direct investment in China seems to have peaked out. Japan’s FDI by big enterprises entered a resting stage, while SMEs have come to a standstill. In order to activate investment activities at Japanese SMEs in China, supporting environments need to be prepared so that SMEs can concentrate their capability in their core activity such as manufacturing.
3. This paper aims at examining the possibility of cloud computing model in China’s computer software and service markets so that we can identify the area where this new approach can be effectively used. Could the cloud computing be a shelter for SMEs in China?

The question of why some multinational corporations perform better than others is in the centre of the analysis of many international business disciplines and the subject of a never-ending debate. In that respect this paper provides empirical evidence by combining strategic management theories and performance measurement techniques. Specifically, it illustrates a way of strategic performance measurement by emphasising the impact of home country’s national culture on MNCs’ performance. Our empirical evidences suggest that home country’s national culture has a direct impact on MNCs’ performance. Additionally, the results clearly indicate that MNCs with higher performance have clear and distinct characteristics.

There is a general agreement at the conception (theoretical) level about the imperative of a public-private partnership and there are various efforts do it. It is also taken into account the experience of other countries of the European Union or other developed countries able to support and to assist with their previous experience.
Public – private partnership aims to high light the role of the two components in general development of society, regional, economic and company development and increase of competitiveness. All of them are subordinated to serve the objective of satisfying the population economic and social requests and/or needs. Efficient communication establishment between the two environments will conduct, for sure, to the development of a segment of satisfied citizens, employees, owner and vice-versa.
The public – private partnership in tourism industry could be developed in various ways. It could start with public – private strategies, joint proposals of regulations, up to growing business together and so on. The present paper aims to underline the main issues of public – private partnership and to propose few models applicable in tourism industry. The proposed models offer an image about better usage of both environment expertise and facilities (power) some of them still open opportunities for Romania.

Frequently, the „Japanese miracle” was a subject of discussion. The book „The Strategist Brain Power – The Business Art in Japan”, by Kenichi Ohmae (Japan, 1975) when the business environment was confronted with serious problems. The book brings, also in Romania (1998), a number of tools that can be used by businessmen in working out strategies ment to lead to performance. Even if the author is declaring himself „an enemy of governments and bureaucrats, and a great supporter of entrepreneurial initiative and private companies”, we believe that the use of the strategist’s comprehenhsion can be „a very powerful weapon, comparable with the laser” for the eradication of some problems in the public services sector. The paper aims at transposing some strategic schemes used in business, in public services, especialy by the idea of extent of freedom versus constraints.

Tourism companies performances and managerial skills

The tourism could be one of the important sectors that create the GDP. That is why its evolution is important for any country. The transformation of the national economies from Eastern European countries caused major changes in tourism and its management requirements. Romanian experience during the last 16 years demonstrates that managerial skills are closely related to the tourism companies’ performances. At the same time, there are different other factors that indirectly influence the evolution of this sector.
In our opinion, the managerial skills are dependent of the level of decision making as a result of the organization autonomy degree, the later one being directly influenced by the type of property.

Renewal marketing management in public and business organizations

The actual challenges for public and private organizations are the EU space and globalization. Romanian authorities – public administration institutions, are confronted with a profound process of transformation as a new EU member that has to come to the same expectations and performances as the others. At the same time the business organizations – companies, national and multinational, are concerned about the new markets, competition, customers and regulations. Both types of organizations have to renew their view about the role of marketing and to restructure their approach and behavior accordingly. We shall examine the most important issues they have to deal with and will propose a generally correlated action plan to be taken into consideration. As this period of time is under the economic and financial crises pressure we also take into account the effects of economic decline and re-launch.

Business Ethics: Some Theoretical Issues

Ethics can be defined as a process of evaluating actions according to moral principal of values. Throughout the centuries people were trying to choose between profit and moral. Perhaps, some of them obtain both, but every time it could have roused ethical issues. Those issues concern fairness, justice, rightness or wrongness; as a result it can only be resolved according to ethical standards.
Setting the ethical standards for the way of doing business in corporation is primarily task of management. Corporations have to maintain the same standards as an individual person and, in addition, corporations, as organizational units, have their own social responsibilities toward customers, employees and society. However, any business should keep its original purpose of functioning - making profit. Balancing the traditional standards of profitability and burden of social responsibilities is not an easy task. In recent years it has been a trend of setting standards of corporate ethics according to high degree of morale.
The central inquiry in this paper is to determine what difference it makes if businesses in a community act ethically or ignore ethics. Since business is the subject, our inquiry centers on money – a value highly appreciated in the U.S., as well as in varying degrees in other countries; ethics is often ignored when faced with the possibility of earning or acquiring large sums of money.
The purpose of this paper is to examine ethics and the various ethical problems which business faces in the hope of increasing our understanding. To the extent knowledge is increased, if it appears that more ethical conduct is desirable, we will consider ways to develop more ethical conduct in business.

Patent trolls have many faces, since the media uses this expression in various ways. The patent troll phenomenon thus seems to be an ambiguous term that is discussed in several directions. This paper reveals that a patent troll as such has no distinct shape or appearance. Our analysis redeems a troll classification solely from firms’ market position, such as being non-practicing, and shows that a patent troll business can only be defined by the respective
activities to enforce IPR. Using 10 cases, of which five are treated in detail, the analysis reveals a distinct typology of the troll business. This paper is furthermore able to identify troll behavior to be: a) an efficient mechanism to enforce IP rights and b) a strategy that yields
excessive license fees and causes inefficient negotiation costs.

ABSTRACT
This research paper focused on the corporate restructuring of Nippon Telegraph Telecommunication (NTT Group) under the pure holding company structure in 1999 and its
implications. In order to understand the holding company structure, we introduced the concept of "internal capital markets" and explained its application within the framework of NTT Group.
Next, we gave an account of the background events leading to NTT Group's corporate restructuring in order to understand the reason for choosing and keeping the
holding company structure. Our research methodologies include interviews with NTT Group's management and data from public sources.
Finally, to analyze the effect of the holding company structure to NTT Group, we conducted a hypothetical valuation analysis using the free cash flow model. Comparing the market value of NTT Group with our valuation results, it appeared that the market has undervalued NTT Group. We concluded our report with some suggestions on how NTT Group might be able to increase their market value.

Based on our empirical analysis on China potential MICE (Meeting-Incentive-Conference-Exhibition) market, we have come to these results:
Firstly, China is an emerging market with the total population is reaching to a one-fifth ratio among total world’s population. Secondly, the Chinese cultural community feature is highly valued. And last but not least, the number of Chinese business travel overseas is continuous
increasing, as our customer analysis pointed out, these are certainly good signals for a potential MICE business opportunity.
Besides the market analysis, this paper aims to analyze the strength and weakness of a typical traveling company such as SA Tour, a real Singapore traveling company, we found out that SA’s strength is brand awareness and package tours. This will contribute to the development of its
business services and products which we also discuss in the marketing strategy in detail in later session.
Next, A real case analysis can not be done without considering the context or environment analysis. So, our methodology is performing a total company analysis combined with a focusing market analysis in China, then, we also used a hypothetical financial model with assumed variables from commercial banks to estimate this project results. In conclusion, the positive Net Present Value (NPV) from the project and good performance of SA Tour in current business, plus the good signals from an increasing and emerging China market in Asia are sound evidence for us to suggest that The Board of Management of The Company should consider a next implementation plan to make this project become feasible.
Finally, we also include in this paper performing a total marketing strategy to support for SA Tour to consider before it goes into the action. It is also considered as an analysis of a market expansion strategy for SA Tour before entering the new potential market, The People’s Republic
of China.

Indian textile industry: sea of potential opportunities

M10 - General
India’s share of the global textile industry is expected to grow from 4% to 7% by 2011-12 and the share of apparel in the export basket is expected to increase from 48% to 60%. A Vision 2010 for textiles formulated by the government after exhaustive interaction with the industry and Export Promotion Councils to capitalize on the positive atmosphere aims to increase India's share in world's textile trade from the current 4% to 8% by 2010 and to achieve export value of US $ 50 billion in 2010. All segments have their own place but even today cotton textiles continue to dominate with 73% share. These technical textiles are an emerging industry with a potential to reach a size of US $ 127 billion in 2010 and hold a great promise for Indian textiles industry. To understand India’s position among other textile producing the industry contributes 9% of GDP and 35% of foreign exchange earnings, India’s share in global exports is only 3% compared to China’s 13.75% percent. Majority of Indian consumers look for definite universal parameters like design, quality and above all merchandizing. Innovation in product design and fabric selection, are vital elements that add to value perception for a product. As per a World Bank study, covering 181 economies, India’s ranking has enhanced marginally in 2009, on various indicators of charisma as a business destination. However, in absolute terms the ranking remains quite low. Significantly, India is ranked a respectable 33 on the limit of protecting the interests of the investors. The EXIM policy provides for the establishment of export processing zones (EPZs) and special economic zones (SEZs). Units in the EPZs that export all of their output can import industrial inputs free of customs duty. Looking at export shares, Korea (6%) and Taiwan (5.5%) are ahead of India, while Turkey (2.9%) has already caught up and others like Thailand (2.3%) and Indonesia (2%) are not much further behind.

Typology of the patent troll business

Patent trolls have many faces, since the media uses this expression in various ways. The patent troll phenomenon thus seems to be an ambiguous term that is discussed in several directions. This paper reveals that a patent troll as such has no distinct shape or appearance. Our analysis redeems a troll classification solely from firms’ market position, such as being non-practicing, and shows that a patent troll business can only be defined by the respective practice to enforce IPR. Using 10 case studies, of which five are treated in detail, the analysis reveals a distinct typology of IPR enforcement mechanisms and suggests a framework to assess the troll business. This paper is furthermore able to identify the nature of troll behavior to be: a) a best practice to enforce IP rights and b) a strategy that may create costs for affected industries. The differentiated troll analysis further reveals negative but also positive effects of the troll business on incentives to innovate.

The informational society is not innocuous for corporations and organizations. The assortment of allomorphic phenomenon that are taking place in corporations and on the implicit human resources management (i.e. persons) cannot set aside any indifference among entrepreneurs, workers or social partners. The corporation’s frameworks, the structure and performance, the person’s management, the labour relations and other new dimensions are analyzed on the present paper, trying to preview some trends. We make an attempt to shape the behaviors and forthcoming procedures of the social actors in order to forecast the management and the labour, with the certainty that the uncertainty is part of the future.

M10 - General
A mind map is a diagram used to represent words, ideas, tasks, or other items linked to and arranged around a central key word or idea. Mind maps are used to generate, visualize, structure, and classify ideas, and as an aid to studying and organizing information, solving problems, making decisions, and writing. The fundamentals of mind map are arranged naturally according to the importance of the concepts, and are classified into groupings, branches, or areas, with the goal of representing semantic or other connections between portions of information. Mind maps may also aid recall of existing memories. The ideas are documented in a mind map radiate from the center of diagram, similar the branches or root system of a tree. The colors are important because they provide an extra dimension of information to help your brain interpret the data more effectively. The mind mapping technique can be used as a authoritative, creative and dynamic way to administer projects, structure and classify multifaceted information, and provide motivating reports that grasp people’s attention. By minimizing words and focusing on associations, mind maps allow project managers and team members to rapidly see dependencies and problems, saving time and money. Using mind maps can notably improve a project team’s productivity.

Mapping the Czech wine market

M10 - General
Paper comes from key economic indicators of eight Czech wine producers, and compares their levels reached in 2000 and 2005 based on the Map of the Marketplace approach. This application shows, that even though the Czech Republic have entered the European Union, in that period, the changes that happened did not have a major influence on the position of selected competitors. Authors also discuss the applicability of selected approach, which does not seem to automatically suggest particular actions to be taken and has to be considered a help in decision making. Interpretation of a particular position in the map, and its development in time can provide an important input for strategy formulation.

Paper tries to map the market position of eight competitors of the Czech wine market in period 2001–2006. Authors use the Map of the Marketplace approach and compare key economic indicators – Relative Market Share and Return on Assets – of selected firms. During the analyzed period we can see, that some changes of one or of both indicators happened in all of the eight cases, but these were not major changes and it is possible to say, that most of businesses kept their position. The leader of the market is a group Bohemia Sekt, majority of eight analyzed businesses are in the position of ‘In- band followers’.

Paper focuses on evaluation of competitiveness of Czech wine production in relation to the development concept formulated within solution of a grant provided by the Czech Ministry of
Agriculture (No. NAZV QF 3276). For evaluation of competitiveness, the concept of “New 7 S” is selected, which tries to move the original concept of McKinsey towards the changed conditions of the dynamically developing business environment. Key competitiveness factors for Czech wine production are considered to be the “shifting the rules of competition”, and “Simultaneous and sequential strategic thrusts” – i.e. factors, which have already proved to be
important in traditional European wine markets in connection with the outbreak of the so called New wine-countries. Paper is written as a part of solution of research plan of FBE MUAF in Brno, No. MSM 6215648904.

I explore the relationship in partnering strategy [exploration – based on weak ties vs. exploitation – based on strong ties], national culture and and firms’ organizational model in the context of global ICT Industry. In the highly uncertain global environment, partnering is the one of the most effective ways to access a broad set of knowledge and resources. In such an environment, an
exploration strategy [based on the multiplicity of weak ties] is more effective than an exploration strategy [based on strong ties]. Using a sample of 30 firms and 10,247 ties I found that national culture that enhances the organizational model also impacts firms’ partnering strategy. Exploration strategy is most characteristic for firms from certain emerging economies [e.g., Indian and Chinese firms] as well as some mature economies [e.g., the US, Sweden, Norway, Canada, and the UK]. Exploration strategy is typical for firms from countries such as France, Spain, and Japan as well as Poland. The
results support the importance of institutions in international strategic management and entrepreneurship.

Contents and Aims of Management Plans for World Heritage Sites: Managerial Analysis with a Special Focus on the Italian Scenario

This paper aims to discuss the use of management tools for the UNESCO World Heritage sites. In particular, it focuses on the specific tool of the “management plan”. We have carried out a three dimension research project:
1) Analysis and development of a strong theoretical background, in order to consider the economic and managerial dimension of the management plans, even from the perspective of cultural tourism;
2) Deep study of Italian state of the art about use and application of management plans by the organizations managing World Heritage sites;
3) Comparison among some national and international case studies, in order to get empirical evidences which could be useful for theoretical considerations, regarding the general management system of the World Heritage sites.
These first phases of research highlight the necessity for further studies in the next years. Notwithstanding, we are able to evidence some elements that can lead the next steps of drafting and monitoring the management plans. The final goal of these processes should be the realization of effective management systems for cultural and natural heritage.
The most important points to be considered are:
- The awareness of the absence of a unique “model” for every kind of UNESCO site; as far as this aspect is concerned, the aim should be the study and application of general guidelines that could be applied to different situations;
- The necessity to realize a real sharing among all the stakeholders of the site with regard to vision, mission and strategies that should be implemented;
- The introduction of performance measurement systems, to get both support to the management and accountability to the community.

Trust and collaboration in the aftermath of conflict: the effects of contract structure

Leveraging a longitudinal dataset concerning 102 inter-firm disputes, we evaluate the effects of contract structure on trust and on the likelihood of continued collaboration. We theoretically refine and empirically extend prior research by (a) distinguishing between control and coordination functions of contracts, (b) separating goodwill-based and competence-based trust, and (c) evaluating the effects of contract structure on relational outcomes in the context of disputes. We find that control provisions increase competence-based trust, but reduce goodwill-based trust, resulting in a net decrease in the likelihood of continued collaboration. Coordination provisions increase competence-based trust, leading to an increased likelihood of continued collaboration.

This paper investigates how contract structure influences inter-firm dispute resolution processes and outcomes by examining a unique dataset consisting of over 150,000 pages of documents relating to 102 business disputes. We find that the level of contract detail affects the type of dispute resolution approach that is adopted when conflict arises, and that different approaches are associated with different costs for resolving the dispute. We also find that the effect of contract choice on dispute resolution approach is moderated by the degree of coordination required in the relationship, and that the effect of dispute approach on costs is moderated by the degree of power asymmetry between the parties. Thus, even after controlling for various attributes of the exchange relationship and the dispute, the choice of contracting structure has important strategic implications.

We apply network analysis to study the ICT R&D locations at the city level. We use a dataset on the location and R&D activity of over 3000 R&D centres belonging to 175 MNEs, located in over 1300 cities around the world. The results show that most of the cities have few R&D connections and are grouped into "cliques", linked through network hubs. Hence, not only is the R&D activity concentrated in space, but also the nexus of connections between locations is limited. Asian and Japanese cities are favoured as a source of R&D services, as compared to European or US cities.

Theory and Practice in Business Intelligence

M10 - General

The debate is developed based on the following considerations: 1 - Business Intelligence (BI) is
unanimous considered the art of gaining business advantage from data; therefore BI systems and infrastructures
must integrate disparate data sources into a single coherent framework for real-time reporting and detailed
analysis within the extended enterprise; 2 - Business Intelligence can be described as a value proposition that
helps organizations in their decision-making processes; 3 – the Business Intelligence Value Chain represents a
„From DATA To PROFIT“ approach and is recommended to ground any performance management program.
Different aspects, including theoretical considerations and practice examples, regarding location intelligence,
mobile BI, cloud-based BI, social BI and collaborative Business Intelligence will be treated, pointing out some
of the author’s contributions.
Nowadays, organizations have adopted more prudent policies requiring a financial justification for nearly every
IT initiative, including Business Intelligence system implementations. A business-driven methodology is
recommended in any BI project management approach, project scoping and planning being vital for the project
success. A business-driven approach of a BI project implementation starts with a feasibility study. The
decision-making process for large projects is very complicated, and will not be subject of this paper. Having in
mind a middle-sized BI project, a feasibility study based on the Monte Carlo simulation method will be
conducted.

The case of Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) has become one of the most widespread business topics among the academic community. Various issues like environmental pollution, economic crisis, corruption, poverty are of major importance these days and besides governments and politicians’ responsibility it is obvious that corporations are also part of these problems. The appliance of CSR is becoming apparent from the corporations, the consumers and the governments in order to face some of the above problems. In Europe the last 15 years, governments, NGOs, small and large enterprises are making an effort to establish in their business CSR strategies so as to become more competitive and innovative in the global market. The research presents the way 46 Greek companies publish CSR activities and which dimensions of CSR are more common among Greek companies. The selection of these companies came from an in depth research on the websites of the companies. The findings reveal that Greek companies over the years become more active especially on environmental issues, human resources and local communities.

This paper addresses a gap in the literature concerning suitability of organizational learning approaches in facing social responsibility challenges, and proposes a developed framework that could proactively bridge this gap. A new framework is designed in order to gain insight on the relationships between the typical organizational learning approaches- which have been discussed extensively so far in the literature- and the brand-new concept of civil learning come out of Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) studies in very recent years. Comparative analysis is employed to identify well-adjusted organizational learning approaches toward social evolution of organizations. Indeed we are looking to propose a specific learning framework for the firms that are tackling with CSR issues. Hence, we qualitatively bridge between organizational learning models and social learning approaches in order to foster a more advanced framework which recommends the employment of specific learning methods and styles to deal with CSR challenges based on the features of the firm and its business contextual considerations.

This study aims to estimate of Business or Formality Index (FI) for business households at provincial and district levels in the rural areas of Vietnam. In order to construct the FI, we implemented a survey of 900 business households in three provinces in Vietnam. Then we estimate the FI for these 900 sampled households. Next, we use a small area estimation method to combine this business household survey and the 2009 Vietnam Population and Housing Census to estimate the FI for all provinces and districts in rural Vietnam. The FI at the national level is estimated to be at 62.7 (according to the score range 1 – 100, the higher the score is, the better the index reflects business environment). The FI varies more greatly at provincial level, from 57.3 to 69.5. The FI for households tends to be higher at more developed provinces and lower at less developed provinces.

In this chapter, the affinities between Value Analysis (VA) and contemporary management methodologies and tools are presented. This comparative study has been started by presentation of VA genesis and Function Analysis System Technique (FAST) as the main root of functional analysis. The relations with methodologies such as: QFD, TQM, 7 new quality tools, Lean Management, Direct Analysis (Macroscope), Value Chain, EPC/ARIS, reengineering and standards elaborated by SAVE International and European Committee of Standardization are discussed. The relationships are visualized in the form of genealogic tree divided into two parts: methodologies raised on the VA basis in West and East. At the end some remarks for identifying affinity relations for future research are given.

This research aims to analyse the drivers to company innovation and their effects on the financial performance. This study is based upon a sample of companies, located in two neighbouring countries (Portugal and Spain). Linear regression was the methodology deployed to analyse the importance of innovation types (differences between Portugal and Spain). To analyse the extent to which the innovation capacity variables influence financial performance (turnover), we made recourse to Probit Regression models. Our results show significant differences in terms of both the drivers and inhibitors to innovation in these two countries. The introduction of products into new markets only proved significant at Spanish companies whilst innovations in both products and processes are significant in both sets of Iberian companies.

This article aims to evaluate the innovation management capacities of knowledge intensive business services (KIBS) and verify to what extent these companies return different profiles when classified by urban versus rural. Taking a sample of 500 KIBS, we applied a questionnaire with results revealing different explanatory variables for KIBS innovation capacities. From the set of five dimensions studied, factors relating strategy, learning, and network best explained rural versus urban KIBS innovation capacities.

This paper proposed a theoretical framework of innovation based on the perspective of ownership, and constructed an empirical research system of the relationship between ownership structure and innovation. In view of existing theme scattered and lack of interaction, this paper proposed a theoretical framework of the relationship between ownership structure and innovation which was regarded as a general theoretical framework for scholars in this domain. Meanwhile, this paper constructed an empirical research system of the relationship between ownership structure and innovation from the perspective of both ownership concentration and ownership types, which would be a beneficial reference for subsequent research. In the end, this paper shed light on future decision-making.

This paper is furthermore able to identify the nature of troll behavior to be: a) a best practice to enforce IP rights in terms of innovation activities and b) a strategy that may create costs for affected industries. The differentiated troll analysis reveals negative but also positive effects of the troll business on incentives to innovate.

Potential of the systems with active elements is examined in the article from point of aims of management. In wide interpretation the potential appears as the multivariate, complex, stochastic parameter reflecting dialectics of system’s internal states at interaction with the external surrounding.
Potential’s types classification implies determination, at first, a positive and negative potential from the point of system's useful function and then the an active and passive potential of system’s elements. In such formulation the purposes of the management becomes expressly measurable.

Oceanic Travel Conditions and American Immigration, 1890-1914

The pace and incidence of improvements to oceanic travel conditions for American immigrants, during the quarter century preceeding the First World War, were significantly constrained by shipping lines’ capacity considerations. The improvements had no detectable impact on the overall volume of migration, but did influence the flow by route and, probably, the frequency of repeat crossings. Data gathered from transatlantic shipping sources quantify the evolution of travel accommodations for migrants, as “closed berth” cabins, for two to eight passengers each, slowly supplanted older and less comfortable “open-berth” dormitory style quarters. By 1900, roughly 20% of North Atlantic second and steerage (third) class passenger capacity was in closed berths; by 1914, 35%. Steerage alone went from about 10% to 24% closed berths. Accommodation of migrants in closed berths came sooner for northern Europe routes and later for the southern. Prior suggestions attributing the pace of the conversion to competitive impediments, and to discrimination against southern European passengers, are not corroborated. Closed berths for migrants came gradually to all routes regardless of shifting cartel effectiveness, passenger cartels enhanced non-price competition (e.g. in on-board conditions) and differentiation was much more by travel route than by passenger ethnicity. Instead, closed berths were significantly related to the incidence of tourist traffic (highest for north Europe, and seasonally somewhat opposite to migration) because capacity utilization could be raised by using the same quarters for tourists and migrants, provided that the thus interchanged units were closed berth cabins. Growing rates of repeat migration seem to have been mostly a (further contributing) cause, but also partly an effect, of conversion from open to closed berths. Travel condition improvements on North Pacific migration routes lagged the North Atlantic, possibly due to the Pacific’s lower percentage of seasonally offsetting tourism, its less-concentrated migrant flows, and its smaller ships with lower scale economies.

This study determines the effects of service quality dimensions on customer satisfaction in Pakistan by using SERVQUAL model. A survey research questionnaire of 30 items has been adopted and collects the data of 400 respondents from the users of internet banking of different bank located in Karachi city of Pakistan. Reliability analysis shows that all dimensions are reliable. Results of factor analysis confirm the grouping of adopted questioner. At last, regression analysis indicates significant positive relationship between assurance, tangibility, reliability and responsiveness with customer satisfaction. Conversely, empathy shows positive but insignificant effect on customer satisfaction. It is recommended that the management of online banks has to focus on making the design and content of the websites more visually appealing to grab the attention of existing customers, as well as to attract new customers. The management has to take effective measures to further enhance the security and safety of online bank accounts, so that customers can maintain long-term relationships with the usage of online banking. Online banks have to provide more reliable services to the customers at heart to make the customers more comfortable and confident. The management should develop more effective systems to solve the issues of customers quickly.

The structure of the paper consists of following points. At the beginning three examples of applying original version of Informational Processes Value Analysis elaborated in the 70s. XX by the University Research Teams for Value Analysis from Cracow University of Economics is presented. On the basis of these case studies the conclusions were drawn and among others suggesting limitation of the auxiliary tools. The supplement of this description is a presentation of the German tool called KIWA (Die Kommunikations- und Informations- Wertanalyse). Next the contemporary versions of Value Analysis are given originated from the USA and Europe. In the last case the example of the European Norm 12973:2000 is presented. Based on the above analysis the two versions of updated IPVA methodology was formulated.
W ostatnim przypadku dokonano odwołania do europejskiej normy EN 12973:2000. W konsekwencji występujących przesłanek przedstawiono dwa warianty aktualizacji AWPI do nowszych rozwiązań metodycznych.

The purpose of this research was to gain an insight into students’ perception about the quality of management education especially the Masters of Business Administration (MBA) program; as structured and taught in India and USA. Specific objectives were comparing students’ perception regarding the quality parameters input, process and output of the two MBA programs. The study covered students who had successfully completed MBA in India and those Indians who had pursued an MBA in USA. The hypothetical associations of students’ perception of high quality education with input, process and output of management schools were tested. Findings indicated that students perceived high quality of education if processes and outputs were satisfactory. Indians completing MBA from USA, perceived good quality of all parameters, with the only problem of finding a good job in America after completion of an MBA.

Utilization of Business Experiments in Postindustrial Environment
Zagorsek, Branislav
M10 - General
Information technologies in the postindustrial era require the companies to use new tools to be competitive within the high-velocity environment. One of the new tools they can use is business experiment. Full potential of business experiments rose with the evolution of information technologies. Using sophisticated information technologies or even basic approaches can help to get decisions much faster or even immediately in real time compared to using traditional methods.
The purpose of this paper is to present several ways of how to use business experiments that can be used to enhance company’s performance and to find out how prone the Slovak companies are to use business experiments. It should also give a picture how are the business experiments linked to level of informatization of the companies.
The two main research foundations of the study were studying actual trends in researches on the topic of business experiments and a self-made survey among 382 companies in Slovakia as a partial outcome of my dissertation research. To interpret the research mathematical and statistical methods were used. First the theoretical basics were formulated and interpreted, as second these basics were enhanced with survey results.
The biggest value of this paper is to present some new approaches of how to gain competitive advantage using business experiments. Using the business experiments the competitive advantage can be gained by decreasing the costs when designing the right portfolio, increasing profit by setting the optimal price or just by designing the right product fitting the specific needs of target group or finding the best business conditions like best geographical situation or even finding some correlations between not related products on the first view that allow to bulk them to increase the profit.

The environmental policy and Corporate Social Responsibility are two notions of high importance for enterprises and nations. Numerous pages have been written about the environmental policy of companies in their CSR reports. Whether it concerns to raise environmental awareness among their employees or local communities or to give in detail their environmental footprint at the end of the story it is about giving proofs of their environmental policy. Climate change is among the topics of CSR reports and is under examination in this paper. A case study analysis will be applied in order to present how climate change is interpreted in the CSR reports of Greek companies from the petroleum refining industry.
