Abstract

The quantitative survey conducted as part of this work verifies that components such as cookie banners and privacy policies on websites and applications are perceived as distracting when using the respective online services. Moreover, most respondents do not read the privacy policy of a service to obtain information about the cookies being used. The survey also seeks to gather additional cookie-related empirical data by subdividing technically unnecessary cookies into nine different types. Respondents most frequently accept cookie data of the “map services” type, while they most often reject tracking cookies. Furthermore, most respondents are opposed to the transfer of cookie data to systems outside the EU. However, the survey indicates that the transfer of cookie data to systems within Germany and the EU is more widely accepted.

Based on these evaluations, it can be concluded that existing methods, such as cookie banners and privacy policies on websites and applications, need to be improved. Companies should be provided with specific tools, such as text generators, to assist in creating legally compliant cookie-related information for online services.
