Abstract
Iran is located on the arid and semi-arid belt of the Earth. A desert is defined as a region with very low precipitation, sparse vegetation, absence of surface water, extremely hot days, and very cold nights. The arid and desert regions of Iran encompass four climatic zones with different conditions: semi-arid, arid, semi-desert, and desert. Desert regions in Iran cover nearly 65 percent of the country’s total area. In fact, two-thirds of Iran’s territory falls under arid and semi-arid conditions. The economic potentials of Iran’s desert regions include: solar energy, wind energy, soil formation, desert trees, desert plants, land use systems in desert regions, animal husbandry in desert areas, mineral resources, and desert tourism. Harnessing these potentials can be incorporated into development programs.
