Abstract

The expansion of the agricultural frontier after 1964 intensified agriculture in the Amazon Region, especially in the states of Rondônia and Acre. This study aims to develop general indices of agricultural modernization for the municipalities of the states of Acre and Rondônia, secondarily grouping these municipalities into clusters of similarity and comparing them with each other. From the X matrix, six factors were extracted that represent 85.59% of the total variance of the variables. The municipalities were grouped into three clusters according to their similarities and then compared based on the Agricultural Modernization Index (IMA). The results showed that the municipalities of Acre present an average level of agricultural modernization with a strong downward bias, while the municipalities of the state of Rondônia have an average level of agricultural modernization with an upward bias. 23% of the municipalities in the micro-regions of Rondônia have a high rate of modernization compared to only 4.54% of the municipalities in the state of Acre. 95.46% of the municipalities of Acre have an average index with a strong downward bias. 77% of the municipalities in the micro-regions of Rondônia present an average level with an upward bias. This result leads to the conclusion that the absence of agricultural policy contributes to the low level of agricultural modernization in the state of Acre.
