Abstract

This is an analysis of Claudio Napoleoni's thought on capitalism, seen as a contradictory economic system which tends to exalt and to compress the human capacity of selfdetermination. The attention of Napoleoni for capitalism has focused on the purpose to explain its intrinsically oppressive nature, to discover its historical fate and to clear the relation between economy and society. In the age of the triumph of technique and of the widespread acknowledgment of the centrality of economics, the recovery of the natural freedom of man can appear a problematic goal. This essay has a reconstructive character and is developed on a threefold analytical ground: historico-critical, economic and philosophical.
