Abstract

This paper proposes to reconsider the methodology (in the first part of the paper) and the history (in the second part) of economics on the basis of the constructivist institutionalism. At present orthodox economists are Popperians (post-positivists) and many heterodox economists are advocates of the critical realism. The constructivist institutionalism opposes to both of them and corresponds in many respects to practices of forgotten economic schools of Gustav Schmoller and John Commons. The constructivist institutionalism, enriched by the ideas of Habermas, also opposes to the elitist vision of democracy that was developed in the economics (the third part of the paper). In the fourth part of the paper I put forward a design based on discursive paradigm for the reform of three elements of economics profession: inquiry; policy development; and moral and political philosophy.
