Abstract

This study is intended to see the influence of the existence of the middle class in Indonesia, especially in influencing public consumption, economic growth and employment opportunities. Using 2009 Susenas data, estimation results show that the number of Indonesia's middle class in the 1999-2009 period increased from 51.9 million (25% of the total population) to 99 million (42.8% of the total population), or grew by about 6.67% on average per year. The estimation results also show that the growth of the middle class has the potential to encourage increased consumption and national economic growth. Increasing the number of middle class also encourages an increase in the number of the workforce employed and further reduces the unemployment rate.
