Abstract

The diversity among students is a great challenge for teachers in the classroom, either by the pace of learning, the way students learn, the knowledge they mobilize, the skills they present, among others. Despite all the social, cultural, cognitive, motor differences, every human being has the potential to develop their skills and is competent/ intelligent in some task. After all, what is being smart? Thinking about this diversity, the present work aims to make some considerations about the Multiple Intelligence Theory, for a discussion about what is intelligence, questioning the conceptual paradigm nowadays steeped in the common sense about being or not an intelligent person. This study sought, through a theoretical essay, to present a reflection on some concepts of intelligence from the perspective of Howard Gardner's Theory of Multiple Intelligences, presenting their categorizations and encouraging discussion about their context and application to teachers, so that they can rethink their pedagogical practices, reaching different and individual competences, therefore, different intelligences, of their students in their classes. The results from this study showed that the importance of understanding the term "intelligence (s)" can help in understanding the elements that make up the teaching-learning process, making it more efficient and taking into account the skills and competences of students.
