Abstract

This study examines the relationship between monetary poverty and access to drinking water and sanitation services in Peru, highlighting how both factors perpetuate cycles of deprivation. In 2023, poverty in the country has shifted from being predominantly rural to urban, posing new challenges for public policies. The COVID-19 pandemic has aggravated household vulnerability and further limited access to basic services. Using data from the National Household Survey (ENAHO), the analysis reveals that poor households without access to water and sanitation face a greater financial burden, perpetuating poverty and restricting social development. It concludes that more effective and targeted public policies are needed to ensure universal and equitable access to drinking water and sanitation, and thus reduce socioeconomic inequalities.
