Abstract

This work lists some vulnerabilities in developing economies and proposes assessments that can improve macroeconomic resilience in relation to external financing. To examine the theory of indebtedness and seek a threshold beyond which external debt can slow economic growth, this paper proposes an empirical evaluation for a sample of 17 middle-income countries between 1980 and 2011. The results obtained after regressions on panel data show a non-linear correlation between external debt and growth, with the presence of certain variables selected a priori likely to influence economic activity.
