Abstract

This paper shows the results of the socio-economic analysis of the state of Quintana Roo, México. The indicators taken into account were education, health, employment profile, income and population. It is often taken for granted that the municipalities within the state of Quintana Roo are all performing well because the state´s economy is driven by the tourist sector which generates income, however, we cannot generalize this outcome since the state is made up of municipalities which reflect the true situation. To carry out this inter-regional analysis we used data from the Population and Housing Census of 2000, 2005 and 2010. Data were obtained for each of the state's municipalities, and based on the technique of micro-regional quotients used by Richardson (1986) and Morales Barragan (1995) we regionalized municipalities and evaluated their performance. The purpose of this study was to contrast the socioeconomic performance of each municipality with that of the state as a whole to have a better picture of the individual municipalities´ situation. This analysis aims to demonstrate that there are municipalities in Quintana Roo that have lagged behind others, and should be taken into account in the elaboration of public policies to achieve a balance and a better welfare for all the citizens of the state.
