Abstract

In Mexico, globalization has caused the importance of agriculture to decline. The south-eastern states of Mexico are traditionally indigenous and agricultural communities, both characteristics position them as marginal. Poverty causes the lack of food and income. Paradoxically, states that have agriculture as their main economic activity are poor. This indicates that agriculture faces obstacles of various kinds that prohibits the generation of jobs and adequate income to overcome hardship. The state of Quintana Roo is mostly of subsistence farming, thus, commercial agriculture is minimal. Here, the underdeveloped agricultural practices results in unproductively. This situation seems to justify the absence of significant public spending and investment in agriculture since government considers this sector of the population engaged in non profitable activities. This is encouraging further neglect of the agricultural sector in detriment of food production and fair prices necessary to improve welfare in these communities. This paper shows the situation of agriculture in the municipality of Othon P. Blanco, Quintana Roo, from the perspective of 30 stakeholders assessing the activity, they helped in defining problems and made propositions of policies aimed at overcoming barriers in agriculture, and therefore of poverty.
