Abstract

State is an essential actor in Employee Relations (Farnham and Pimlott, 1995). It not only legislates the institutional framework on employtment relationship (Godard, 1994), but acts as an employer as well. Moreover, the State plans and implement various economic and social policies concerning the industrial relations system (Godard, 1994). Also it may cause implications on the macroeconomic, political and legal views of labour market, and the bargaining power of labour relations actors (Leat, 2007). In the contemporary perspective of globalization, the role of national Governments is being reduced and other transnational actors (i.e. European Union) replace partly their functions (Keller, 1989). This chapter examines the theoretical and ideological origins on State intervention in Industrial Relations. Furthermore, pertinent practices of State role in employment relations are being discussed.
