Abstract

This paper examines the determinants of household labour supply in France, emphasising in the intrahousehold bargaining process. We will perform a statistical and econometric analysis on the basis of the European Union Statistics on Income and Living Conditions (EU-SILC) for couples in France. Therefore, this paper provides an empirical contribution about the suitability of Chiappori collective model. To that end, following Crespo (2005) we stablish differences in the education level between members of the couple as the distributive factor that affects the bargaining power of each couple member. The empirical results show that differences in the education level has a significant effect over women labour supply. Therefore, when the female partner has a higher degree of training than her partner does, she will generally obtain greater bargaining power and consequently offer a lower labour supply.
