Abstract

This volume consists of ten articles that represent the frontiers of development economics. It presents the reflections of pioneering scholars in development economics on the future of the discipline. By juxtaposing the perspectives of the early generation of development economists with those of the more recent generation, it seeks to chart the evolving trajectory of development economics. In its treatment of development objectives, the book highlights the primacy of human development beyond the narrow confines of economic growth, while also underscoring the multi-causal nature of underdevelopment. A central contribution of the work lies in its systematic distinction between the resolved and unresolved issues of development, thereby delineating an agenda that challenges economists to advance the field further. The present article reviews the critical assessments of the book offered by Max Corden and Henry Bruton. It then turns, in the fourth section, to an examination of the historical and contemporary frontiers of development economics. The past frontiers are articulated through seven core questions and their answers, whereas the current frontiers are delineated in nine distinct dimensions. The fifth section is devoted to a critical appraisal of the book’s substantive contributions.
