Abstract
In this paper it is made a review of the economic literature in input-output analysis, with two goals in mind: a) to place the work developed by Leontief in terms o the history of economic thought; and b) to present the principles of the evolution of this theory, in theoretical and practical terms. To achieve such goals, first it is made a research on the roots of the Leontief’s theory. Then, it is made a presentation on the principles in which the inputoutput analysis is based, first through a brief presentation of the Leontief’s static and dynamic models, then through the presentation of the main fields in which Leontief has contributed with innovations. Following, it is made a presentation of the applications that have been developed in the input-output studies in a broader sense and applied to the Brazilian economy. To conclude, some insights about the future of the input-output theory are made.
