Abstract

This paper focuses on transaction tasks as seen on the micro level. We suggest how transaction tasks can be measured by the official statistics. The article complements a previous one by Chobanov, Egbert and Gyuredjeklieva (2006) published in this journal and discusses the weaknesses of existing concepts and methods of measuring transaction costs in a national economy. Here we aim at refining the preliminary notions and propose a hands-on method for data collection at the level of organizations such as firms or state institutions. We are measuring the transaction and the transformation sector by investigating job tasks. We show that the insignificant extension of the job description form obligatory for every employee in Bulgaria can be the starting point for statistical data collection on the transaction and transformation tasks of each worker. Data can then be aggregated on different levels, for instance for organization, for an industry, or for a national economy. Provided the respective institutions back the proposed method, then Bulgaria would be a forerunner for collecting and processing data on transaction cost in an economy.
