Abstract
It is important for Sub-Saharan African (SSA) countries to identify the main drivers of their international competitiveness in order to facilitate policies which will allow its enhancement. Whereas gains of international competitiveness are huge, SSA’s countries remain experiencing many difficulties in matter of international competitiveness. This paper analyzes the main drivers of SSA’s international competitiveness by using the theoretical framework provided by Porter (1990), modified by Moon et al. (1998) and adopted by Agbor and Taiwo (2014). In order to take into account the dynamic characteristic international competitiveness, we estimate a dynamic panel data model with system GMM of Blundell and Bond (1998). Findings suggest that development of African router infrastructure is not sufficient to enhance African international competitiveness. Inversely, financial development plays a positive role in SSA competitiveness enhancement. Results show positive links between international competitiveness and inflation in SSA region. The quality of SSA’s institutions continues sapping African international competitiveness. Evidence shows that the history of competitiveness has positive impacts on international competitiveness in SSA countries, justifying therefore, the relevance of the dynamic model chosen for the analysis.
