Abstract

The document analyzes the importance of the use of Business Development Services (SDE) in the performance of micro and small enterprises (MSEs) in Peru, in the case of the garment and metalworking sectors. First, a conceptual framework on SDE is developed. Then, it shows how the SDE market works for MSEs in Peru and analyzes the supply and demand factors that affect the use of BDS in the sectors studied using information from a specific survey of MSEs and data from interviews with BDS providers. This analysis takes into account the diverse characteristics of the company and its environment that may limit the use of SDE. Subsequently, specific quantitative methodologies are used to estimate the impact of SDE on indicators such as the number of workers in the company, profitability and output per worker. For this, the type of SDE used, its characteristics and its intensity of use are considered. Finally, some final thoughts on how to promote the use of BDS by MSEs and improve their positive effects are included.
