Abstract

This study aims to examine and analyze various problems related to the development of productive waqf in Indonesia. With a qualitative-descriptive approach, this study discusses the mechanism of waqf development in Indonesia. Furthermore, with a quantitative approach using Susenas 2014 data, the potential for developing fixed assets and movable assets (cash waqf) is calculated. The results showed that Indonesia has waqf property, especially land, the most extensive in the world, which is around 440,512.89 ha. The property development orientation is still dominant for religious facilities (mosques and mushallas), which is around 73%; for educational facilities (around 13.3%), and the rest for social purposes (grave and other social purposes). If the asset is developed productively, the potential is huge, which is around 19.4% of the Gross Domestic Product (GDP). Assuming that Indonesian Muslims give waqf Rp10,000 per month, the potential for waqf funds collected reaches around Rp197.0 billion per month (Rp2.36 trillion per year) to Rp985.01 billion per month (Rp11.82 trillion per year). Spatially (regionally) the greatest potential for cash waqf is estimated to come from West Java Province.
