Abstract

The aim of this study is to analyse the employment gap of Hungary compared to the Visegrád countries, Austria and a 10-member group of Central and Eastern European countries (CEE10) on the basis of EU Labour Force Survey (EU LFS) annual data for the year 2012. Using the microdata of the age group 15–64 I compute employment probabilities based on a probit model that uses gender, age and education level as explanatory variables. I analyse the differences in these probabilities according to gender, age and education level. I develop a procedure based on employment differences that are observable on the individual level to analyse the following questions. Which groups determine the overall level of employment gap? What are the main characteristics (e.g. professional status, firm size, sectoral distribution, full time versus part time) of higher employment?
