Abstract
Most of the contractions in economic activity during crises have had a negative impact on social spending and therefore on health spending. The Great Recession (2007-2013) has been no exception for rich countries and in the case of Latin America, the economic slowdown has had other dimensions and particularities. This document discusses the evidence for seven South American countries: Argentina, Brazil, Uruguay, Paraguay, Venezuela, Chile and Colombia in terms of public health spending and out-of-pocket health spending. The results show a fiscal expansion associated with maintaining positive product rates, although not always accompanied by a proportional expansion of public health spending and in all cases a steady increase in out-of-pocket spending.
