Abstract

This paper studies the pattern of trade specialization (PTE) of Uruguay and the dynamics that characterized it throughout the last twenty years. From a descriptive analysis of the PTE is used the methodological framework of the product space developed by Haussman et al (2007) to site Uruguay in terms of its commercial specialization. The EP is the network of relationships that are established between products that are internationally traded. There is a link between the value of each product and its network of interconnections such that more sophisticated products are densely connected around a core, as products with less degree of sophistication are sited in much less dense periphery. The results show that the PEE of Uruguay is composed of products that are relatively "disconnected" each other, and that this has been a historical feature, not found that proximity" or neighborhood is a determining factor when explaining the 'transition' of a product toward the PEE. Uruguay then departs from the presented literature, becoming an example of the process of opening a small economy with a less parsimonious than the planned change of the specialization pattern.
