Abstract

This quantitative research investigated the factor structure of the attitudes of 348 Grade 10 students towards mathematics and the dimensions that significantly predict Mathematics performance. The study utilized the author-permitted questionnaire ATMI and the secondary data obtained from the National Career Assessment Examination (NCAE). A data reduction technique under Principal Component Analysis was used to assess the dimensionality of the attitudes toward Mathematics. Results revealed that in the context of Matanao, Davao del Sur, Attitude Toward Mathematics is multidimensional with two dimensions explored and confirmed in the background, namely; Interest and Anxiety. Moreover, it was depicted that attitude towards mathematics significantly predicts performance in Mathematics. In terms of sex, it was found out that females performed better than males. Thus, the structured model suggested that their attitudes toward Mathematics significantly determine the students` Mathematics performance.
