Abstract

The objective of this study is to analyze the extent of the gender pay gap in Cameroon. For this purpuse, we mobilized data from Cameroonian household surveys (ECAM2, ECAM3 and ECAM4) and the extension of Oaxaca-Blinder decomposition by Smith & Welch (1989) to changes in wage gaps. Our results show that the gender wage gap narrowed by almost 0.204 over the period, going from 0.654 to 0.450. This reduction has been heterogeneous throughout the distribution. While there has been a reduction linked to the evolution of men and women towards more similar occupations within the group of the least paid individuals, among the most paid it is an increase that we observe. This increase of 0.044 and 0.328 in quantiles 75 and 90 respectively is largely attributed to the dissimilarity in male and female wage structures. Our results therefore suggest that particular attention should be paid to policies conducive to reducing gender inequalities among the most paid.
