Abstract

This paper aims to examine the main points of the emergence of controversies regarding digital currencies. By using secondary data and qualitative-descriptive analysis, it was found that digital currency cannot replace the function of money as a medium of exchange, a store of value, and a unit of account. Digital currencies also cannot be used as investment instruments because their prices are volatile and have the potential to cause speculative bubbles. The treatment of countries against these currencies also varies. Of the 251 countries that are familiar with digital currencies, around 43% of them recognize digital currency as a legal tender, while the rest recognize it as a commodity, property, and barter goods.
