Abstract

In a world that gets more and more connected every day, and where countries interact on global markets with a frequency like never before, an economic crisis has an effect with a reach much wider than some years ago. Little is known for the Mexican case about the impact of the crisis of 2008 on labor income and worked hours for the whole economically active population, individuals working in different sectors, and commonly considered highly vulnerable groups like women or single mothers. I use a difference-in-differences estimator to measure the impact of the crisis on the labor income and worked hours of Mexican women and men working in different sectors. The following investigation has three main strings: 1. I will provide evidence that the crisis of 2008 had an impact on labor income and worked hours; 2. I will show that different regions and sectors in Mexico were affected differently; 3. I distinguish the impact between women and men, and focus on single mothers.
